HONOLULU, HI— A new improvisation class will be presented at Kumu Kahua Theatre, taught by improv veterans, Monica and Squire Coldwell.
Using Improv to Audition - Get ready to improvise your next audition!
In this workshop, students will spend six hours over two-day intervals for four weeks enhancing and honing your audition skills. Students should plan to stay on their toes while taking chances as they develop their individual skills and those of working with others.
Instructor Monica Coldwell explains, "By focusing on connecting, listening, and creating with others, you will gain confidence and explore auditioning skills such as, identifying and developing characters, using movement to express yourself and your character, finding ways to relate to the person you are on stage with, and much more. We will lend instruction and lead participants through movement-based improv exercises and activities. Please dress ready to move, bring water, and have fun exploring."
Monica and Squire Coldwell collectively have extensive theatre, dance, and improvisation experience. They have been studying improvisation and performing improvisation and theatre for decades; they have studied with over two dozen visiting instructors and created improvisation long-forms (improvised shows generally more than 20 minutes long, as compared to short-form sketches of a few minutes). They have performed at improvisation festivals, both locally and nationally, as well as on the main stage at the Chicago Improv Festival. They also founded Hawaii’s first non-profit improvisation organization ImprovEd Hawaii. They have taught teachers, actors, students of all ages, and fellow improvisers skills including, building self-confidence, creating collaborations, curriculum, improvised plays, and theatre skills.
Monica and Squire Coldwell directed the Kumu Kahua Theatre summer 2018 production of 38 Minutes, which utilized a combination of improvisation and locally-written scripts about the January 2018 ballistic missile threat to Hawaii.
