A Little History…Hui Nalu, the “Club of the Waves”, was founded in 1908 by Duke Kahanamoku, Knute Cot The ages of the participants range from 10 to 70+years.

Hui Nalu, the “Club of the Waves”, was founded in 1908 by Duke Kahanamoku, Knute Cottrell and Ken Winter. Based at the Moana Hotel in Waikiki, swimming was the primary activity of the dub in the early years. Club members also enjoyed surfing, canoe paddling and kanikapila. The summer regatta season involves age group and open races in lengths from 1/4 to 1-1/2 miles. Hui Nalu Canoe Club also spons

ors a pre-season race in Maunalua Bay dedicated to former head coach Kala Kukea, as well as a regular season regatta to honor former coach John D. Kaupiko. Long distance racing is limited to the adult divisions with occasional exceptions.

So awesome to see our Hui Nalu members come out on their own free time to make sure our waʻa are safe and sound as Hurricane Lala approaches.

Mahalo to everyone who stepped up to secure our fleet. Hope everyone stays safe and has their homes and ʻohana secured too.

🚨 LOST PADDLE 🚨

Paddle was lost during the Dad Center Race near Sherwood. It’s a 50” Makana Aliʻi carbon fiber paddle with pink trim, with the name “Kerri” written at the top.

If anyone saw it floating by during the race or happened to pick it up, please let us know! 🙏🏼💕 Would really love to get it back to its owner. Mahalo!

Mahalo for an amazing John D. Kaupiko Regatta! 🖤💛

A huge mahalo to our entire Hui Nalu ʻohana, all of our volunteers, officials, paddlers, coaches, families, and the entire OHCRA community for coming together and making our club’s regatta such a special day. It takes so many hands, countless hours, and a whole lot of aloha to make a race like this happen.

We are proud to honor the legacy of John D. Kaupiko and continue the tradition of competition, community, and aloha for the waʻa. Mahalo to every club that came out to race and share the day with us!

John D. Lukela “John D” Kaupiko was a legendary Hawaiian canoe paddler, steersman, and longtime coach of Hui Nalu Canoe Club. He coached Hui Nalu for nearly 30 years, leading the club through many successful years until his death in 1962.

The John D. Kaupiko Regatta—the race Hui Nalu hosts—is named in his honor because of his lasting impact on outrigger canoe racing, Hui Nalu, and generations of young paddlers

General Requirements for Entry on Base
●
Base access is open Saturday, July 11, 2026 from 0700 to 1200, for clubs to trailer
canoes, set-up tents, and stage other equipment required for the Sunday regatta.
●
Base access on Sunday, July 12, 2026, will begin no earlier than 0530. There is no
waiting area outside the gate, so please time your arrival accordingly.
●
The gate to the race venue will open at 0530. Please do not arrive early as there is no
shoulder to wait for the gate to open and cars blocking the road is not permissible.
●
All visitors 18 years and older must present one of the following forms of identification –
a valid REAL ID (ie, State ID or Drivers License with a gold star), U.S. Passport,
Military ID, or U.S. Government-issued CAC at the gate.
●
Inform the gate sentry that you are attending the canoe regatta.
●
Foreign Nationals must be pre-vetted and submit a copy of their passport and country
of origin. To preserve individual’s privacy, submission is electronic via this LINK. Forms
are due no later than Friday, July 3, 2026.

First regatta race of the season — the Clement Paiana Race hosted by Healani! 🌊

What a fun day on the water. Congratulations to all of our Hui Nalu crews who have been putting in the hard work and finally had the chance to showcase it. From our keiki to our kupuna, it was awesome to see everyone out there representing the club with heart, determination, and aloha.

Mahalo to everyone who joined us yesterday. It was a beautiful canoe blessing ceremony filled with aloha, culture, and community. Mahalo to Kumu Keolani Correa Noa for sharing her ʻike and guiding us through such a meaningful blessing.

Our waʻa have been blessed, our hearts are full, and our canoes are ready for a great season ahead. Wishing all our paddlers safe waters, strong crews, and many memories together this year. Go Hui Nalu! 🤙🌺

Join us for our Ho‘olauna & Canoe Blessing on May 30, 2026 at the Hui Nalu Halau 🌊

Bring a pupu dish to share and a lei to lei the canoes as we come together to celebrate our waʻa, our club, and our community.

We’ll also be having a Cradle Building Contest 🛠️

Other entertainment includes: Talent Show, learn to rig, and talk Story with Chris Kramer of Maunalua Fish Ponds.
