“Lions Green Thumb Vegetable Garden”
Saturday September 28, 2024 8:30am
Kauluwela Elementary School
Good health for our keiki stems out from what we feed them. It is estimated that Lions Green Thumb Project will eventually support 400 students and their families by providing a source of rich nutrients necessary from the efforts of a locally built vegetable garden at Kauluwela Elementary. These children will benefit from enjoying fresh vegetables which are necessary to reduce the risk of growth deficiencies and diseases. Hawai`i Lions Clubs and LEOs (their youth organization) will assemble 20 vegetable planters on September 28, 2024 beginning at 8:30am.
On campus, the site has adequate sunshine, water source, easy access from the visitor's parking, space to expand and locked fence for security. The storage shed is also ideally located nearby. The course of the project will be a long-term ongoing cycle involving planting seeds, garden maintenance, harvesting, packing vegetables and distribution.
For the students of Kauluwela it will reinforce their science, agriculture, and environmental curriculum by having a hands-on learning experience. Teachers will incorporate this mission into their long running environmental science program Project Kulia. Kauluwela pupils will take pride in their accomplishment of gaining practical knowledge and making an impact of contribution by giving back to their school & community. Along with the students are school staff having the support from 2 teachers, 1 educational assistant, and grounds manager dedicated to Lions Green Thumb Project.
The Honolulu Chinatown Lions Club have secured grant funding from the Lions Clubs International Foundation. Monies have gone towards the purchases of several storage sheds, vegetable planters and initial startup of the garden supplies.
The International Association of Lions Clubs, known for their motto "We Serve," is prominently evident amongst Hawai`i Lions Clubs. For almost 100 years, Hawai`i Lions statewide bring about many positive changes within our communities by implementing and completing service projects. These of which help to improve and support a variety of efforts to sustain the livelihood of these communities. The hard work of the Hawai`i Lions are undaunted.
