🌊Kailua is getting major infrastructure upgrades!

This week we celebrated the groundbreaking of two important projects at the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant totaling over $85 million. These investments will protect public health, keep our beaches clean, and ensure reliable wastewater treatment for Kailua and Kāneʻohe for decades to come.

Congratulations to:

• Nan, Inc. – building the new Dewatering Building

• Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company – rehabilitating the Biotowers

Both contractors employ union carpenters and apprentices who are helping deliver high-quality work for our community.

Construction will be limited to respectful hours so we can minimize impacts on our ʻAikahi neighbors.

Mahalo to Mayor Rick Blangiardi, Councilmember Esther Kiaʻāina, Director Roger Babcock, and all the construction partners making this possible.

This is what investing in our neighborhoods looks like!

Hey friends 👋 A new study from the National Association of Home Builders reveals that government regulations are adding nearly **$132,000** to the cost of an average new single-family home. That’s **26.4%** of the final price ($499,500) — and it’s up significantly from five years ago.

The biggest single factor? Evolving building codes over the past decade.

These costs directly affect families trying to buy a home. And of course, the regulatory costs are higher in Hawai'i!

Smarter regulation doesn’t mean less safety — it means more attainable housing. Full NAHB report here: https://tinyurl.com/4kbnjtv7

Hawai‘i’s construction industry got off to a fast start in Q1 2026 — recording $2.09 billion in total spending, the second-strongest first quarter in the past decade.

Public works projects, particularly major state infrastructure, carried the load. However, there was a concerning drop in housing construction: single-family activity fell by $126 million and multi-family by $229 million compared to Q1 2025.

PRP Executive Director Nathaniel Kinney put it clearly:
“Although we could see an upswing later in the year, it’s critical for our policymakers to focus on building new homes. Hawai‘i needs more than 64,000 housing units just to catch up.”

We must ease the regulatory burden, invest in infrastructure, and fully commit to transit-oriented development.

Community impact is top of mind for Nordic PCL Construction president Glen Kaneshige as his company undertakes some of Hawai‘i’s most challenging construction projects. “It’s important to stay rooted to the vision of what we’re doing to help the community we live in,” says Kaneshige, who has been Nordic’s president and CEO since 1999.

Nordic PCL Construction is advancing two major emergency department expansions on Oʻahu, at Straub Benioff Medical Center in Honolulu and The Queen’s Medical Center, West Oʻahu in ʻEwa Beach.
