We'd like you to meet our 2026 Summer Interns! ☀️

First up! Samantha Wäcker! Sammy was born and raised in Maunalua and is entering her final year at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she is pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies with a focus in conservation. She's excited to apply her knowledge of marine conservation to the waters she calls home. Through this internship, she looks forward to connecting with the community, gaining hands-on experience in coral restoration, and contributing to local conservation efforts. She is grateful for the opportunity and eager to support the ongoing stewardship of Maunalua Bay and the surrounding 'āina.

Next we have Ella Munsey! Ella is from Pu'uloa, O'ahu and is a current student at Hawai'i Technology Academy in Waipahu. Throughout her school career, she has volunteered around the island and learned about the scientific and cultural elements in conservation. She looks forward to using her knowledge in the internship to help bring a positive change to Maunalua Bay and to learn more about the different ways MM is working to protect the coastlines for future generations.

Welcome Sammy and Ella! 🤙🏽Stay tuned for more introductions from our other interns in the days to come!

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and father figures out there!

Mahalo for showing up, whether it's in the water at a huki event or behind-the-scenes supporting the next generation of ocean stewards. We're grateful for the example you set, the lessons you share, and the many ways you help care for our families, communities, and beyond. We appreciate you today and every day, Dads! 😎

Exciting news! Hawaiian Airlines introduced its new Tide & Vine wine program. And guess what? A portion of the proceeds is donated to Mālama Maunalua!

Mahalo nui to Hawaiian & Alaska Airlines for this partnership, and for Team Kōkua coming out to a huki event with us in celebration of World Oceans Day. Enjoy a can on your next Hawaiian Airlines flight and support MM! 🤙🏽

Ever wonder, what a day in the life of MM staff looks like? Here's the 360 edition! Although we do spend plenty of time in the office, we also get to be out in the field mālama-ing the Bay!
Today, we got to go check on our coral reef tables, where we support corals of opportunity and maybe holo holo for some invasive fish along the way!

Please note that it is illegal to handle or disturb corals in Hawaiʻi without the appropriate permits. All coral-related activities depicted in this post are authorized under a
Special Activities Permit issued by the Hawaiʻi Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR). Volunteers are supervised at all times and are not permitted to handle corals outside
the scope of the permitted activities.

What a special night with at the for our first lei making workshop!

Participants spent the evening learning from Kawehi Perry-Ah Hoy, the owner of , about the art, traditions, and cultural significance of lei making while creating beautiful lei from plants harvested throughout the Maunalua region. Using invasive gorilla ogo, ti leaf, ʻaʻaliʻi, and kaunaʻoa, we explored a variety of lei-making techniques and discovered how these materials connect us to the places they come from.

This workshop was an opportunity to deepen our relationship with the natural world from mauka to makai, learn about the ecosystems that provide these resources, and reflect on our shared responsibility to care for them. Mahalo to everyone who joined us for an evening of learning, creativity, and connection!
