🌺 NFB of Hawaii 2026 State Convention Resolutions: Our Roadmap for the Future 🌈

Our resolutions are our roadmap, reflecting the principles we stand on, the direction we’re headed, and the priorities guiding our work for blind people across our beautiful Aloha State.

Here’s a quick look at our six 2026 state convention resolutions:

📌 Resolution 2026-01: Regarding Ho’opono staff crisis

Calls for urgent action to address Ho‘opono’s critical instructor shortage through competitive pay, improved recruitment, and retention efforts to protect its essential adjustment-to-blindness training program from closure.

📌 Resolution 2026-02: Regarding Vocational Rehabilitation restoration of cuts and full funding

Calls for restoring cuts to Hawaii’s Vocational Rehabilitation program and securing full funding to protect essential employment services for blind people and others with disabilities while maximizing available federal matching funds.

📌 Resolution 2026-03: Regarding Election accessibility

Supports continuing Hawaii’s accessible vote-by-mail system, ensuring blind voters can cast their ballots privately and independently, while recognizing state and county election officials for their commitment to accessibility.

📌 Resolution 2026-04: Regarding Accessible Pedestrian Signals

Calls for statewide legislation, funding, and coordinated efforts to install and maintain accessible pedestrian signals at intersections throughout Hawaii, ensuring blind pedestrians have access to essential crossing information for safe, independent travel.

📌 Resolution 2026-05: Regarding ride-share discrimination

Calls for stronger state regulation and enforcement to hold ride-share companies like Uber and Lyft accountable for disability discrimination, ensuring blind residents and visitors, including those traveling with service animals, have equal access to transportation.

📌 Resolution 2026-06: Regarding the proposed Kapahulu Transportation Mobility Hub

Supports the development of the Kapahulu Transportation Mobility Hub while calling for improved access to nearby libraries, especially the Library for the Blind and Print Disabled, with safer pedestrian crossings, convenient transit access, and input from blind community members.

Have You Faced Barriers Because of Smart Glasses?:

The National Federation of the Blind wants to hear from blind people who have faced discrimination or been denied access because they use smart glasses as access technology. As discussed in the recent Presidential Release Live, some public conversations about Meta and other smart glasses do not yet recognize that these devices can perform legitimate accessibility functions for blind people. They may help with reading printed information, understanding surroundings, getting visual interpretation, or completing everyday tasks more independently.

If a business, workplace, venue, school, transportation provider, or other entity has told you that you cannot enter, participate, or receive service while wearing smart glasses, please share your experience with us. Include where it happened, what device you were using, what explanation you received, whether you identified the glasses as access technology, and how the incident affected your ability to participate. Your reports will help us educate the public, document emerging barriers, and advocate for policies that protect blind people's access to the technology we use to live the lives we want.

The Leeward Oʻahu Chapter's Dance to Finance Cultural Luau has been rescheduled for this Sunday, September 6.
