Our workshop is led by a Family Law Attorney, an Estate Planning Attorney/Licensed Financial Professional, a Licensed Therapist, and Real Estate Agent. Living with less money is hard. You may feel anxious about money or bitter that you’ve lost a comfortable life. You may miss the house and the vacation. These are all totally valid feelings, and it’s okay to feel them as long as you don’t dissolve into a puddle of regret and resentment.

Give yourself time to heal, both emotionally and financially. You may have spent all your savings on your divorce attorney. Acknowledge that you won’t replace that money in a day. It took you years to save it, so it will take a while to get it back. Embrace the process of slowly paying down your debt and building your savings back.

No part of a marital split is fun, but one of the most difficult steps is telling your kids that you and your spouse are getting divorced or separated.

No parent wants to cause their children pain or to break up a family. However, informing your children about your divorce has to be done.

Keep in mind that this conversation will likely be a “flashbulb memory,” or a memory your kids will hold onto forever.

The way you tell your children about divorce will also set the foundation for the entire process. While you can’t make this painful conversation easy, you can avoid making it unnecessarily difficult or upsetting.

When calculating how much to save for a divorce, the first thing to consider is the cost of the divorce itself.

You’ll probably end up paying more if your estate is complicated, but the number one factor affecting cost is whether you and your spouse are willing to work together to negotiate a settlement (such as through mediation), or if you will end up in court. The more time you spend in court, the more attorneys’ fees you’ll rack up, and the more expensive your divorce will be. If you have a vindictive spouse or already have a feeling you won’t be able to agree on touchy issues, like child custody, you may need to stash away more money.
