Did you know that more than 70% of fisheries worldwide catch multiple species using different types of fishing gear?

This summer, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership's FishSource team explored the challenges of multi-species/multi-gear (MSMG) fisheries in Thailand as part of our Gulf of Thailand (GoTFish) project.

Our ecosystem-based approach investigates traceability gaps, potential illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and risks beyond individual fish stocks.

By considering ecosystem health, fisheries management, and fishing communities, this hands-on research and regional collaboration make FishSource a more accurate and comprehensive tool for assessing fisheries sustainability.

On August 14, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted new regulations aimed at reducing whale entanglements in the state’s commercial Dungeness crab fishery. The measures include a requirement for the fleet to comply with electronic vessel monitoring by February 2027, as well as provisions for experimental fishing permits that will facilitate the testing of whale-safe, pop-up fishing gear.

Under the new regulations, pop-up gear, also known as on-demand or ropeless fishing gear, may now be authorized for testing through an Experimental Fishing Gear Permit (EFGP). In addition, requirements related to surface gear have also been updated.

SFP’s Manasanan David Phillips, our Thailand Seafood Markets Incentives Specialist, penned a blog this month about his experiences at THAIFEX, a massive food and beverage show in Bangkok. David was at the show to learn more about Thailand’s fish sauce industry and speak with producers, as part of the GoTFish Project.

Join SFP’s Protecting Ocean Wildlife team October 6 in Santa Cruz, CA, for an immersive, behind-the-scenes look at how industry and science are working together to protect marine wildlife and ensure a sustainable future for the U.S. West Coast pot and trap fisheries, through the introduction of on-demand fishing gear technologies.

The free event will include a tour of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation (NMFS) Gear Lending Library, a hands-on dockside demonstration of on-demand gear, and opportunities to engage directly with the gear developers, harvesters, and organizations that are developing and implementing these solutions.
