We are thrilled to share that SFP is officially part of this year's Global Shrimp Forum (GSF) program! To kick the week off, SFP, the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), and the Aquaculture Action Alliance (AAA) are inviting you to a special Social Hour next Monday!

Held right after our in-person AAA meeting and just before the forum begins, this social event is the perfect opportunity for GSF attendees to network, mingle with existing AAA members, and learn more about our ongoing initiatives.

Every tuna sourcing decision tells a complex story: connecting source fisheries, vessel activity, sustainability progress, and improvement efforts. But piecing that story together isn’t always easy.

To help seafood companies cut through the complexity, SFP is launching the new Tuna Sustainability Dashboard.

The dashboard integrates fishery and vessel-level information into a single platform to help seafood companies better understand their supply chains and easily identify opportunities for improvement.

What can you expect?

🐟 Actionable insights on fishery certification statuses, levels of electronic monitoring and observer coverage, and other sustainability insights to support sourcing decisions

We're thrilled to see industry leaders from our Global Squid Supply Chain Roundtable pledge their support for the newly released public statement linked below.

Our Supply Chain Roundtables serve as a forum to bring seafood buyers, processors, and importers together to drive pre-competitive improvements across the industry. Through this public statement, buyers are taking a firm, unified stance: ensuring the long-term viability of highly dynamic squid and pota fisheries requires management approaches firmly grounded in the best available science.

To combat severe risks like overfishing and IUU fishing, which are exacerbated by weak monitoring systems and fragmented governance, these committed buyers are calling for:

🦑 Improved data collection at both the vessel and fleet levels.
🦑 Greater transparency and traceability throughout the entire supply chain.
🦑 Science-based management decisions that reflect the biological variability of squid stocks and protect coastal livelihoods.

Exciting News! 🌊

In March 2025, the Mexican Snapper Grouper SR approved implementation of a Sustainable Sourcing Policy designed to strengthen the market for sustainable seafood products. The policy introduced two key commitments from SR participants: prioritizing sourcing from Mexican companies engaged in fishery improvement projects (FIPs), and implementing voluntary minimum size limits for several key species to help ensure fish have the opportunity to reproduce before harvest.

The SR participants leading this effort include ADR Global Fisheries Corp, Beacon Fisheries Inc., Heads & Tails Seafood, Inc. John Nagle Co., Local Foods, Netuno USA and Water Street Seafood.

We’re excited to share that the first round of compliance verification has now been completed, with strong results. By January 2026, five of the seven SR participants had at least one major supplier participating in a FIP, including one supplier that joined a FIP in 2025 directly in response to requests from an SR participant. The remaining participants are continuing discussions with suppliers and will keep advocating for FIP participation throughout 2026.
Compliance with the voluntary minimum size limits was also highly encouraging, with all SR participants reporting that at least 95% of purchases exceeded the agreed minimum size thresholds.

These results show the real impact that can happen when seafood companies work together to turn sustainability commitments into action.

What does it actually take to make sustainable seafood more than a marketing claim? Data. Consistent, impartial, science-based data that the whole industry can act on.

In 2006, the sustainable seafood movement had passion and momentum but no shared definition of something as fundamental as what a fishery even was. So SFP built FishSource to solve that problem.

Nearly 20 years later, FishSource covers:
🐟 Close to 5,800 fisheries across more than 1,700 stocks
🐟 77 aquaculture regions in 22 countries
🐟 An estimated 80% of seafood sold in Northern Europe and North America

Eleven scores translate complex fisheries science into something buyers and suppliers can actually use, covering stock status, management quality, bycatch, habitat impacts, and, most recently, whether small-scale fishers have legal rights and a voice in managing their own fisheries.

The seafood industry talks a lot about sustainability commitments. FishSource is what makes those commitments verifiable.

We're thrilled to share that the new (8th) edition of the Fishery Improvement Projects Database (FIP-dB) is now out!

Developed by SFP and the Hilborn Lab at the University of Washington, the updated FIP-DB is another strong step forward in helping us understand how FIPs are evolving and impacting fisheries globally.

Two additions in this update that are worth mentioning:
• FIP stage indicators: This additional data provides additional information on the work developed by each FIP, as well as the related outputs and outcomes.
• FAO GRSF unique fishery IDs: These identifiers, which are associated to the fisheries covered by FIPs, provide a better alignment with other global fisheries datasets

As FIPs continue to grow in number and relevance, having structured, accessible data like this is essential. And this not just true for research, but for practical decision-making across the value chain.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 🌊

Today we're celebrating as SFP and Seafood Souq have signed a new MOU at Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global to advance seafood supply chain transparency across the Middle East and beyond. This marks a huge milestone as this is SFP's first partnership ever with a middle eastern company.

By combining Seafood Souq’s digital traceability platform with SFP’s sustainability analytics, the partnership will give businesses in the MENA region access to end-to-end sourcing data and actionable insights on sustainability risks.

“The Middle East is a critical node in the global seafood trade, and it is a region where the demand for transparency and responsible sourcing is growing rapidly. Seafood Souq has built something remarkable: a platform that makes traceability accessible and actionable across some of the world’s most complex supply chains. This partnership, our first formal one in the region, allows us to bring SFP’s risk-based sustainability analytics directly into that infrastructure.” – David Parreno Duque, SFP Partnerships Engagement Specialist.

As global demand for transparency grows, and with challenges like seafood mislabeling and IUU fishing still widespread, this collaboration aims to equip supply chain actors with the tools needed to make more informed, responsible sourcing decisions.

From anchovies to global markets, Cambodia’s fish sauce sector is a powerful example of how tradition and sustainability can go hand in hand.

Along Cambodia’s coast, small pelagic fish like anchovies move through a complex supply chain: from fishers and landing sites to processors and export markets, supporting livelihoods and a deeply rooted cultural industry.

Strengthening collaboration across this chain is key to improving quality, traceability, and responsible sourcing, while helping producers meet growing international demand.

Through the GoTFish project, SFP is partnering with local stakeholders to better understand this sector and identify opportunities to enhance sustainability, market access, and long-term resilience. From improved handling practices to stronger transparency and certification- these efforts are helping Cambodia’s fish sauce producers compete globally while preserving tradition.

As global markets increasingly reward responsible practices, Cambodia’s fish sauce sector shows how supply chain collaboration can unlock both environmental and economic benefits.
