Israeli Dance Group-Honolulu

Israeli Dance Group-Honolulu We usually meet on the second and forth Sundays of every month 2-4 pm (with instruction at the beginning) at the Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse Ballroom.

Israeli Folk dancing began in Honolulu in the 1970's. Nikki (Miriam) Paisner led the group and staged performances in the community until she left for Colorado. We were without an official home until, at the urging of David Hanan, a native-born Israeli, a new group was formed in 1988 led by David and Laurie Hanan and Ellen Spielvogel, soon joined by Fran Margulies. Amy Kogut and David Brandon supp

lied the music from their collection. We met weekly at the Kahala Recreation Center and later at the University of Hawaii. The Jewish Federation of Hawaii sponsored us until HAWAII ISRAELI RECREATIONAL DANCE was born and officially incorporated in Hawaii in 1999. Two years later we received our own federal non-profit status, and we have been dancing continuously ever since. Our members have taken great pleasure in joining the international community of Israeli Dance both by going to mainland workshops and by bringing choreographers and well-known teachers here. We have hosted Danny Uziel, Israel Yakovee, David Edery, Edy Greenblatt, Shlomo Bachar, William Harvey, Ira Weisburd, Roberto Bagnoli. For some years we had a close relationship with the Trask family, Barbara Jones, and their dance clubs in New Zealand. The experienced teachers now are Ellen Spielvogel and Diane Miller, helped by Rachel Ahuvia, our resident Israeli. Rachel also leads HORA!, a small and dedicated performing group active for the last ten years in community and synagogue festivals. Our regular home now is the upstairs ballroom of the Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse at 404 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu 96815. Our sessions are the first Sunday of every month 1- 4 PM and the third Sunday 2-4 PM, with additional sessions often scheduled. (Call or email us!) We welcome visitors. We reserve the first hour and a half of the first Sunday of all months for beginning and intermediate level instruction. Fran Margulies, President,

Dear Israeli dancers,
We are NOT dancing this Sunday March 22. Our ballroom and the Ala Wai Golf Course Building are closed while we all wait out this new community threat.
Too bad! No circle dancing for a while. (Maybe singing in the shower?)
We will let you know about Israeli dance in April. The Ala Wai bldg will remain closed through April, but the Movement Center in Kaimuki is a possibility. I will keep you informed.
Aloha and Shalom!
Fran

Dear Israeli dancers and friends,

Come and join the dance circle ----- this Sunday Dec 8 -- from 2 to 4 PM - at the Ala Wai Golf Course Club House. (For newcomers, this two story building is just off Kapahulu Ave bordering the Ala Wai Canal. The Waikiki Public Library is on the corner..We dance in the ballroom of the Clubhouse which is upstairs on the second floor. An elevator is available at the eva end of the building.)

We had an excellent and well attended session last time. Let's do it again! Judy kept the music going, and, in the temporary absence of Ellen, Judy has rounded up some of us oldtimers to teach and lead the dances we know best. It worked well, and the last session went by almost too fast. I look forward to another full and musical two hours.

CHeck out our website for club background, names of dances, instructional videos, and upcoming dance calendar:

Donations of any amount are welcome. We suggest $6 for the session, but we MAINLY want you to come and dance!

See you Sunday afternoon,

Fran

Dear dancers,
Come and dance! We have the Ala Wai Ballroom this SUnday, Nov 10, from 2 to 4 PM. The tradewinds are picking up, I notice, so let's catch a breeze and MOVE! We have had nice attendance recently, and Ellen always has a variety of old and new Israeli music for us to dance to, to study, and to just enjoy.
Donations of any amount are accepted. $6 is suggested but not required. We want you to attend!
Take a look at our website. There you will find dance videos, instructions, some club history, AND the exact address of the Ala Wai Golf Course sign-in building where we hold our dance session upstairs in the second floor ballroom.
