History:
Established in Fall 2007 by Erenst Anip (Lecturer of Indonesian), and Riza Lestari & Riana Helen Agnesia (Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant for Indonesian - FLTA) as
a place for people to learn more about Indonesia. Specifically, the club is geared toward students taking Indonesian courses as place for them to practice the language skills they have acquired. In addition, with the breadth and width of interest in Indonesia within the University and the community, having this club would serve as a hub or point of contact for
those interested in different aspects of Indonesia. In relationship with the Indonesian Students Association Hawaii Chapter (Permias), we serve as a complement to them. Where they organize Indonesian students here, our club organize students/people interested in Indonesia. Indonesian Club at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (Indo Club) is a Registered Independent Organization at UH Manoa, meaning the club have access to the student activities fee via proposal for events and other facilities usage at a discount. Nongkrong Yuk is a colloquial phrase in Indonesian that means let's hang out. As such, the club is rather informal in its approach to its events and activities, with no active membership requirements, membership dues, or mandatory activities. In terms of organization, we try to keep lean and flexible where at any one time, only three to four people will hold executive positions (president, treasurer, secretary, vice president – if necessary). With no membership fees and zero funding to begin with, the founding executive board was aggressive in securing funding from Student Activities and Program Fee Board (SAPFB), which administers student activities fee, and Associated Student of the University of Hawaii at Manoa (ASUH). Additional funding was obtained from fund raising through concession agreements with Kennedy Theatre and Hawaii Gamelan Society, individual donations, and the selling of Indo Club t-shirts.
