Today's Rotary on the Road was a follow-up to a recent presentation by Bettina Mehnert of AHL on the new Oahu jail project that's been in the works for about a decade.

Members from Honolulu Sunrise, Metropolitan, and West Honolulu had the opportunity to tour Oahu Community Correctional Center (OCCC) and hear directly from Warden John Schell. The visit provided valuable insight into the facility, its operations, and the challenges and opportunities involved in serving this important role within our community.

A special mahalo to Warden Schell for sharing his experience, knowledge, and perspective. It was an informative and thought-provoking visit that gave us a deeper understanding of a part of our community that many people rarely have the opportunity to see firsthand.

Mahalo also to Bettina and AHL for helping make this visit possible.

John Balberdi is the maintenance person for a condo apartment in Waikiki, quietly taking care of the things most people never think about… until something breaks. The kind of work that often goes unseen, but makes a real difference every single day.

He wasn’t able to attend our meeting — because, fittingly, he was working.

His award was accepted on his behalf by member Katie, who nominated him for this well-deserved recognition.

This is exactly what our Unsung Heroes program is about: recognizing the invisible work that keeps everything running.

Thank you, John, for all that you do.

We’re proud to recognize Jun Takao as one of our 2026 Rotary Unsung Heroes.

Jun is part of a local cycling group — and if you ask the people who ride with him, they’ll tell you the same thing: he’s the glue that holds it all together.

The one who shows up. The one who helps. The one who fixes anything for anyone at any time. A real-life MacGyver.

Several of our members who ride with Jun joined us in their cycling gear to celebrate him — a small reflection of the big impact he’s had on their community.

Jun, thank you for the way you take care of others. It doesn’t go unnoticed.

We were pleased to welcome Tina Andrade, CEO of Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi, as our featured speaker this week. Be-Jay Kodama, VP of Philanthropy, also was in attendance.

Tina shared about the incredible work her team is doing across our community — supporting kūpuna, families, and individuals in times of need, and showing up where it matters most.

It was a powerful reminder of how much impact one organization can have when it leads with compassion, consistency, and care.

Mahalo, Tina, for the work you and your team does every day to strengthen our community. 💛
