🌏 Economic Policy Forum + Mahalo | ハワイ・日本経済政策フォーラム・感謝を込めて

The Summit continued on May 22 with an Economic Policy Forum at the East-West Center at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

💼 Sponsored by the City and County of Honolulu and planned by the Japan-America Society of Hawaiʻi and Hawaiʻi Leadership Forum, the forum brought together invited government officials and business leaders for focused discussions on strengthening business connections between Hawaiʻi and Japan.

🤝 Participants explored the opportunities and challenges faced by Hawaiʻi companies seeking to do business in Japan and Japanese companies seeking to do business in Hawaiʻi. The forum extended the Summit’s mission beyond dialogue and into action, creating space to identify barriers, exchange ideas, and support future trade, investment, entrepreneurship, and economic collaboration.

🙏 Mahalo to the generous sponsors, planning committee members, and volunteers whose support, time, and behind-the-scenes work made the 2026 Hawaiʻi–Japan Sister State and Sister City Summit possible.

🌏 At the heart of this Summit was a powerful message: sister-state and sister-city relationships are living partnerships. When nurtured with care, they create trusted platforms for cultural understanding, educational exchange, economic opportunity, policy dialogue, and people-to-people connection.

This school year, JASH’s Japan-in-a-Suitcase (JIAS) program brought Japanese culture and the idea of “Different Perspectives” to keiki across Oʻahu!

During the 2025–2026 school year, our amazing volunteer team delivered 148 interactive presentations to approximately 3,000 students at 34 elementary schools.

Through activities, games, visuals, and discussions, students in kindergarten through 5th grade explored school life, geography, language, traditions, and everyday culture in Japan and Hawaiʻi.

One student shared that the presentation helped them understand how the world can look different depending on the perspective — such as maps showing different countries at the center. Another student said their favorite part was seeing photos of Japanese schools and hoped to visit Japan one day!

On June 17, JASH hosted a volunteer appreciation luncheon at Gyotaku Japanese Restaurant to celebrate the volunteers who made this year possible.

Mahalo to all of our JIAS volunteers for sharing your time, energy, and passion for cultural education with Hawaiʻi’s keiki. Your dedication continues to inspire the next generation to learn about the world with open minds and curiosity.
