This Week in Vietnam War history, on June 13, 1971, the New York Times published the first of a series of articles based on the Pentagon Papers, a leaked collection of secret government files that revealed the classified history of U.S. policy in Vietnam from 1945 to 1967. The files, which included over 7,000 pages examining the course of U.S. action in Southeast Asia, had been given to the Times by a former federal government intelligence analyst named Daniel Ellsberg. Ellsberg who was personally opposed to the war, hoped that the papers would spur congressional action and public outcry to end American involvement in Vietnam.
