Be There AND Be Square! We are teaming up with Nerd Nite Honolulu next week to bring the current issue of Ka Pili Kai - Moku ʻo Waiʻanae to you!

Nerd Nite Honolulu 🦉✨ is hosted at Tavanas AtAnnas every first Tuesday of the month! Doors open at 6:30pm, talks start at 7:00pm! No cover and the audience must be 21+

1. Terra Faraon "What is Pili Nā Moku? Learn about the Waiʻanae Moku!"
As the Waiʻanae moku resilience stewardship coordinator for the University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program, Terra Faraon focuses on engagement, ecosystem stewardship, and capacity building for the Waiʻanae community. Bringing over 17 years of experience to the region, her background includes serving as an award-winning science teacher at Nānākuli High and Intermediate School and leading community-focused place-based learning initiatives.

2. Anuhea Kāneali'i "Are You as Smart as Kūpuna? Testing Your Firewise Knowledge"
Anu is the firewise support specialist for homestead communities for Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, supporting wildfire preparedness and risk reduction efforts across the pae 'aina. A fourth-generation homesteader from O'ahu, she brings deep cultural and community knowledge to her work and specializes in supporting Firewise USA® site development in Native Hawaiian homelands.

3. Mikey Inouye "Ways to Mālama Mākua"
Mikey is an independent filmmaker, community organizer and documentarian, best known for directing the award-winning documentary Mālama Mākua and the short film Like a Mighty Wave.

Kicking off a brand-new series! Join us for the first installment of the Sustainable Fisheries Seminar, featuring Dr. Felipe Carvalho, Chief of the Assessment & Research Branch at NOAA’s Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center.

From local island livelihoods to massive global tuna fisheries, science plays a vital role in balancing culture, food security, and economic sustainability across Hawaiʻi, American Samoa, Guam, and the CNMI.

Dr. Carvalho will share insights on generating rigorous, impactful science across these diverse scales—and open a discussion on how institutions like NOAA and UH can help train the next generation of Pacific fisheries scientists.

On June 30, 2026 the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra opened their Blockbuster Summer Festival with the Symphony of the Hawai’i Seas! This concert is the culmination of 3+ years in the making working together with cultural practitioners, educators, scientists, ocean stewards, animators, composers, fiscal officers, & local organizations. Gordon Grau, the Grau Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for post-graduate students to gain hands-on experience in coastal and marine resource management and policy across Hawaiʻi. Modeled after the prestigious John A. Please join us tomorrow, Saturday, July 18th, as we celebrate Oʻahu's first Deep-Sea Day at the Waikiki Aquarium from 9-3 pm! There will be educational and interactive booths from deep-sea research labs at School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology - SOEST, National Geographic, University of Hawai'i Sea Grant College Program, and local conservation organizations! The event will close with a panel on deep-sea exploration with University of Hawaii at Manoa Oceanography professors Dr. Jeffrey Drazen and Dr. F***y Girard, and director of Deep-Sea Research at National Geographic Pristine Seas, Whitney Goodell at 2:00 p.m.!
