🌺 Celebrating Herb Mahelona! 🌺

We’re so proud to see former HYOC staff member Herb Mahelona featured in MidWeek Hawaii! 🎶

For decades, Herb has shared his incredible gifts as an educator, composer, and musician—including creating original operas specifically for Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus students to perform. His work has helped generations of young singers connect with music, storytelling, and the rich culture of Hawaiʻi.

Most recently, Herb composed Kamalehua: The Sheltering Tree, a professional opera telling a story rooted in Hawaiian history and culture. We were especially proud to see HYOC alumni make up nearly half of the chorus for this important production—a beautiful reflection of the lasting impact of Herb’s work with young performers. 🌺

Mahalo, Herb, for continuing to create opportunities for Hawaiʻi’s young artists and for nurturing the next generation of storytellers through opera. ❤️

📖 Read Herb’s feature in the September 30 issue of MidWeek Hawaii.
