We will continue to show up
1 in 5 firefighters develop PTSD, double the rate of veterans. Cancer risk is 9% higher than the general population. Repeated exposure to carcinogens, chronic sleep disruption, and sudden cardiac events are silent killers. The danger doesn’t end when the fire does. All Hazards. All the Time. Check in on your team mates. Get screened.

Hauʻoli lā Kamehameha!
Today we honor King Kamehameha the Great, whose vision, leadership, and determination united the Hawaiian Islands into one kingdom.

His image proudly appears on our HFFA logo as a reminder that our greatest strength comes from unity. Just as King Kamehameha brought the islands together, Hawaii’s firefighters remain steadfast together as one union, one voice, and one ʻohana across all islands.

March 19th. Flash Flood Watch active. River rising. KFD responded.

19 people stranded on the Uluwehi Trail. 14 of them children. A swollen, fast-moving river between them and safety.

Kapa’a Fire Station, Rescue 3, the Battalion Chief, and KFD’s Highwater vehicle were on scene and working. No waiting for the water to drop. No waiting for easier conditions. Crews got in that river, used the kayaks to move all 19 people across, and got them out to Kamokila Village one by one.

That is swift water rescue in real time. The current does not care. The flood does not pause. And these firefighters put their bodies between that danger and 19 people who did not know how bad it was about to get.

Every single person made it out. Not a single injury.

Three hours of dangerous, physical, high-stakes work in flood conditions. That is what your Hawaii Fire Fighters showed up and did that day, and continue to do everyday.

So much more than “fight fire.”
All hazards. All the time.

Mt. Kaʻala, Waiʻanae- Tuesday afternoon, 17 firefighters across 6 units dropped everything and went to work. Air 1 in the sky, ground crews pushing up the mountain from two sides, coordinating across shifting GPS locations on rough terrain.

Hours later, one hiker home safe.

This is what these men and women do every single day. Fires, rescues, medical calls, whatever comes in. No hesitation. No shortcuts. Just Hawaii’s firefighters doing what they were trained to do.

We see you, HFD. The islands are better because of you.

Check in on your teammates.

We run in so others can get out. Nobody acknowledges what follows US home.
We see it. We’re fighting to change it.

Your Hawaii Fire Fighters are asked to do so much more than “fight fires.”

Recently, HFFA members from across the state gathered on Oahu for a Dive Rescue Intl training course.

Public Safety divers can be tasked with victim rescue and recovery missions, crime scene investigation/preservation, light salvage, auto extrication, and even hazmat incidents.

These low frequency HIGH risk operations are just a small example of the many skill sets your Hawaii Fire Fighters take pride being professionals in.
