“Life is a journey. You only get one time around, so take advantage of it.”

After moving to Hawaiʻi to be closer to her daughter, Paulette faced a serious fall, hospitalization, and uncertainty about where she would live. Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi helped her take the next step with housing support, and Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center later became a place where she could stay active, connected, and encouraged.

Today, Paulette keeps moving forward with strength, gratitude, and hope.

Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi Vice President of Philanthropy Be-Jay Kodama joined fellow local fundraising leaders at Chaminade University of Honolulu, HI for a meaningful conversation about the spirit of Kīnāʻole and its role in major gifts fundraising.

The panel was moderated by Patti Look, Principal of The FundDevelopment Group, and featured Kristi Bates, Senior Director of Major Gifts & Donor Engagement at the YMCA of Honolulu, Karla Zarate-Ramirez, Vice President for Development at the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation, and Be-Jay.

In Hawaiʻi, successful philanthropy begins with relationships.

Kīnāʻole means doing the right thing, in the right way, at the right time, with the right intention—and building relationships worthy of trust.

The presentation explored how trust, deep listening and authentic stewardship can create stronger, more meaningful relationships between donors and the organizations they support.

Panelists shared stories and practical lessons about building relationships before making an ask, understanding a donor’s goals, and creating opportunities for generosity to align with shared purpose.

The conversation also highlighted the importance of patience, humility, culture and aloha in creating relationships that can grow over time.

Three years ago, the Maui wildfires forever changed Lahaina and the lives of thousands of families.

While homes are being rebuilt and many families have found stable housing, recovery is about more than rebuilding structures. For many survivors, the emotional impact of loss, displacement, and uncertainty continues every day.

Mental health remains one of the greatest long-term needs in Maui's recovery.

Through counseling, trauma-informed care, and the Maui Support Center, Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi continues to walk alongside wildfire survivors and the first responders, educators, healthcare workers, clergy, and community helpers who have spent the past three years caring for others.

Healing takes time, and no one should have to face it alone.

As we remember those affected by the Maui wildfires, we remain committed to helping individuals, families, and communities find hope, healing, and stability for as long as recovery takes.

Today, we also lift up in prayer the individuals, families, and first responders impacted by the wildfires in Washington. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters there, just as Catholic Charities organizations across the country stood with Maui during its time of need.

Together, we continue to rebuild lives, strengthen communities, and bring hope where it is needed most.

From uncertainty to independence. ❤️

At 17, Maya entered Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi's Horizons Independent Living Program after years of instability, mental health challenges, and time at the Hawaiʻi Youth Correctional Facility.
She arrived with two goals: find a job and build a stable future.

With support from her Horizons team, Maya developed healthy daily routines, enrolled in SNAP and Medicaid, secured employment, and successfully transitioned into Horizons 2 after turning 18. Today, she's working, saving money, and preparing for independent living.

Every year, approximately 60–70 youth age out of Hawaiʻi's foster care system, and many face adulthood without the support of family. Programs like Horizons provide the housing, life skills, and guidance that help young adults build brighter futures.

In 2025, Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi impacted 74,391 people statewide, including 6,167 children, youth, and families. Maya's story reminds us that behind every number is a life transformed.
