Since its launch in spring 2024, Maui County’s Maui Homeowner Assistance Fund Program has provided financial assistance to 500 homeowner households facing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Maui wildfires.

Before the county program concluded last month, Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, as the program’s administrator, distributed $19 million in mortgage payments, utility expenses, and homeowners association payments to qualified recipients.

“We are especially grateful to Catholic Charities Hawai‘i for administering the program and to the Hawai‘i Housing Finance and Development Corporation for its coordination, guidance and support throughout this critical effort,” said Maui County Department of Housing Director Richard E. Mitchell. “Their partnership was instrumental to its success.”

Catholic Charities Hawai‘i was honored to be part of this important initiative that supported our Maui brothers and sisters during their time of greatest need.

One conversation can make a difference.

Every day, an average of 17.7 U.S. veterans die by su***de. In Hawaiʻi, 18 veterans died by su***de in 2024.

Those numbers remind us why conversations about mental health and su***de prevention matter.

During Su***de Prevention Month, Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi’s Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF) program hosted “1 Degree of Separation: A Comedy Show on Depression, Su***de and Hope.” The event was co-sponsored by Governor Josh Green’s Hawaiʻi Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Su***de Among Service Members, Veterans and their Families.

The evening combined laughter, personal stories and honest conversations about mental health. Four comedians shared their experiences while demonstrating five questions that can help open a conversation:

💬 What does depression look like?
💬 What do others do that makes it worse?
💬 What do you do that makes it worse?
💬 What do others do that makes it better?
💬 What do you do that makes things better?

Just two days later, one attendee had two young women come into her office feeling sad and depressed. With those five questions still fresh in her mind, she was able to open a conversation with them.

By the end, everyone was laughing, and the young women left feeling much better.

That is what su***de prevention can look like. Not always having all the answers, but being willing to listen, ask a question and stay connected.

Su***de Prevention Month may be over, but the conversation should continue.

Sometimes, one conversation can make a difference.

A movement that started at Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi continues today.

More than 30 years ago, the women of Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi challenged the men of our agency to take action against domestic violence.

Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi counselor Joe Bloom, LCSW, answered that call and organized the first Men’s March in 1994.

What began with a small group of CCH staff walking through downtown Honolulu grew into a communitywide movement.

On October 1, hundreds of people joined the 32nd annual Domestic Violence Action Center Men’s March Against Violence in downtown Honolulu.

Participants walked together, remembered lives lost to domestic violence, and stood with survivors and families across Hawaiʻi.

The leadership of the march was passed to the Domestic Violence Action Center in 2015, and the tradition continues today.

Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi is proud of its role in the history of this important movement.

More than three decades later, the message remains strong: Stand up. Speak out. Help create a Hawaiʻi free from domestic violence.

🚙 A New Beginning for Christy and Her Family

Recently, at the Veterans Movement Foundation’s 5th Annual Golf Tournament, Christy and her family received a gift that means so much more than a vehicle. It means freedom, stability, opportunity and hope.

Christy is a devoted mother of six. Two years ago, Christy made the courageous decision to leave a domestic violence situation and build a safer, more stable future for her family.

After a head on collision left her without reliable transportation, getting to work and caring for her family became even more challenging.

Christy and her family receive support through Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi’s YES ICS (Intensive Clinical Services) program. CCH therapists work directly with youth and families in their homes and communities, helping strengthen family relationships, build life skills and support emotional well being.

Reliable transportation will help Christy get to work so she can continue supporting her family, while helping her children get to school, medical appointments, activities and other opportunities.

💚 Mahalo to the sponsors who made this gift possible:

🚗 Vehicle donated by: TradeWind Capital
🔧 Repairs donated by: Oka’s Collision Centers of Hawaii
🤝 Contributing sponsors: ADAS Calibrations of Hawaii and Saigon Towing

A special mahalo to CCH Board member Patrick Guzman, an Army veteran and member of the Knights of Columbus Hawaii, for his instrumental role in coordinating this gift.

At the presentation, Christy shared:

“You didn't just give me and my family a truck. You gave us hope, relief and the opportunity to build a better future.”

We are grateful to everyone who helped turn a difficult moment into a new beginning for Christy and her children. 💚

Mahalo for helping this family move forward with hope.

Moving, Connecting and Staying Engaged at Kahala Nui

Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi was proud to join the kūpuna at Kahala Nui Retirement & Assisted Living Facility for a special “Walk Around” focused on movement, connection and staying active.

CCH staff joined residents as they walked throughout the community, encouraging everyone to keep moving and enjoy the benefits of physical activity. Our team also led fun “mind teaser” brain exercises designed to keep minds active and engaged.

Most importantly, the visit gave CCH staff the opportunity to spend meaningful time with the kūpuna, share some laughs and enjoy conversation together.

At Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi, we believe that supporting our kūpuna means more than providing services. It means building connections, creating opportunities for engagement and celebrating the dignity and experiences of every person.

We are grateful to Kahala Nui for welcoming us and for the opportunity to walk, think, laugh and connect with the kūpuna in our community.
