Beginning in Sept 2017 a group of nurse leaders in Hawaii began the process of meeting requirements set forth by American Nurses Association (ANA) Board of Directors to create a Consistuent State Nurses Association (CSNA) in Hawaii. At the time Hawaii was only 2 of 50 states without a state nurses association affiliate of ANA; the other being Alaska which to this day does not have a CSNA. Over the course of three years the nurse leaders grew ANA membership in Hawaii, connected with the nursing community via public events and online presence, surveyed the nursing community on interest of a CSNA, and proved to ANA that Hawaii was indeed committed to the establishment of a State Nurses Association. In December of 2019 the ANA Board of Directors reviewed the work of the Hawaii Leadership Team and approved of the establishment of Hawaii - American Nurses Association. On March 1, 2020 Hawaii - ANA officially launched!
Many of you may remember when ANA and Hawaii Nurses Association (HNA) were a joint group. However when American Nurses Associated made the decision to step away from joint affiliation with collective bargaining groups the American Nurses Association in Hawaii fell away. At present HNA remains but membership is only available to nurses whom work for specific HNA health systems and hospitals. Their interests are for their members and are not encompassing of all nurses in the state of Hawaii. Hence the brith of Hawaii - American Nurses Association! The professional nurses association representing all 17,000 RNs in the state of Hawaii. Our mission is to empower nurses to advocate for the improvement of the healthcare system where we live and work. Hawaii - ANA has been active in providing testimony to current state bills in this years 2020 legislation and will remain active in years to come. Our goal is to become a ANCC approver to ensure all nurses in Hawaii are able to easily obtain their continued education requirement for licensure renewal, provide networking events to strengthen the nursing community, advocate for the improvement of health care in Hawaii, and most importantly promote the profession of nursing.
