It’s time retailers are required to put the country of origin on ahi poke - hopeful the Hawaii State Legislature will pass a law accordingly this upcoming session

Hawaiʻi longline fishers are struggling to make a living these days, and some are thinking about leaving the industry altogether. Pay is an issue — so are higher costs and international competition. One change that may help focuses on origin labeling. HPR's Mark Ladao explains.

The United States seafood market is flooded with this cheap, artificially treated, imported tuna that undercuts USA produced seafood. To sell this product, distributors and retailers don't tell the truth and purposely mislead consumers with little government oversight. All Hawaii landed seafood is ice chilled and not gassed or injected with dyes. Buy local!!

The increasingly common process is used to make low-grade tuna appear to be of a higher quality through a mixture of chemicals and gas treatments that often go unlabeled.

Mahalo Kapili for taking the lead in outfitting our fleet with brand new, bird deterring tori lines!

Reducing seabird interactions in the Hawaii longline fishery has long been an industry priority…

Over the years we’ve modified hooks, changed what kind of bait we use, carried dip nets and de-hooking tools and increased observer coverage just to name a few mitigation measures…

We are hopeful that our implementation of tori lines will further reduce seabird interactions and help set an example for other fleets operating in the Pacific to follow.

Premium grade tuna fetches top dollar at this morning’s Honolulu Fish Auction. This 99 lb specimen was auctioned off at $14.90 per pound for a total of ~$1500! Considering that an G&G tuna yields ~50% of loin… the buyer is more than $3000 into this one fish! Someone’s eating good tonight. Congrats to HI LL vessel, Triple Dragon for bringing in premium quality at the perfect time. If you’re interested in experiencing the excitement of the Honolulu Fish Auction, you can book a tour with Hawaii Seafood Council. DM for more info.

boat Hawaii longline vessel battles massive storm 200 miles offshore... Our fleet weathered back to back storm systems last month resulting in some damage to vessels, but thankfully no injuries. Captain Sam Fee of f/v Caroleigh captured some frightening footage of the maelstrom from the wheel house... stay safe out there and thank you!
