We built this community brick by brick.

Since 2021, we’ve applied for and received state and county proclamations for our annual Mālama Your Ma`i campaign and Period Poverty Awareness week, recognized by the Alliance for Period Supplies. I still remember the first year we applied and our request got rejected. It felt like a defeat, but we didn’t take no for an answer. Instead, we leaned on community connections, and with the help of Khara when she was head of the State Commission on the Status of Women, we got it done.

This year’s celebration and proclamation feels like a full circle moment.

In 2021, Khara organized a proclamation presentation with First Lady Dawn Ige, legislators and community members over Zoom because no one was meeting in person due to COVID. I vividly remember Senator Kurt Fevella was the only legislator on that Zoom to speak openly about how important the issue and proclamation was. He shared about the women in his family, their experiences, and it was in that moment that I knew we were making an impact beyond us.

And here we are five years later…this picture means so much to us and shows how far we’ve come.

Everyone pictured here represents a part of our history and story of our services, advocacy work, and community partnerships. We are especially grateful to the Senate President Kouchi for championing our policies and never shying away from talking to everyone and anyone, in and out of the Capitol, about periods and the importance of this work. It is because of him that Hawai’i is a leader in the menstrual equity policy space.

🌺And don’t forget to make your voice heard by June 30th… We’re currently conducting a 5-year follow-up survey to better understand how access, awareness, and experiences around menstruation have changed across Hawaiʻi, and where gaps still remain.

Mālama Your Maʻi may be coming to a close, but this work doesn’t end here.

Over the past month, you’ve helped raise awareness, spark conversations, support access, and strengthen a growing network of care. Together, we’ve shined a light on period poverty and menstrual inequity while investing in a future where everyone has access to the products and resources they need to thrive.

But we’re not done.

Mālama Your Maʻi has never been just an annual campaign. It’s part of a larger movement toward long-term, sustainable access to period care and education, built by and for our lāhui. Whether through Maʻi Care Kits, education, advocacy, or community partnerships, this work is about creating a future where all of our keiki, wāhine, and lāhui thrive.

Mahalo for showing up. Mahalo for learning, sharing, giving, advocating, and standing with us. Every conversation, donation, volunteer hour, and act of support helps move this work forward.

As we close out this year’s campaign, we invite you to help shape what’s next.

This past Friday, in our last outreach event during Mālama Your Maʻi month, we were invited to table at the Hoʻopili Resource Fair hosted by the Hawaiʻi State Judiciary’s Adult Client Services Branch.

The fair provided free food, resources, and support services for nearby communities, including SNAP, EBT assistance, and more. It was our second time joining their event and we were able to give out all 30 Maʻi Care kits. But what really touched us when a man came over and talked story about his experience.
He said, “When my daughter first got her maʻi, she called and cried because she was bleeding in front of her friends. She called and told me to go store to buy pads. I didn’t have money at the time, so she asked her mom. But now, I can give her these instead of buying them from the store.” He only asked for one, but we gave him two, just in case.

Mahalo nui to Kawika for inviting us to be a part of this amazing event and for helping us continue our mission of supporting menstrual equity in our communities. This is what it’s all about.

🤎Don’t forget…. we are currently running a 5-year follow-up survey to better understand how access, awareness, and experiences have changed…and identify where gaps still exist.

Mālama Your Maʻi 2026 | Menstrual Hygiene Day

Join us in celebrating Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) today, May 28th! The date was chosen for its symbolic representation of the menstrual cycle. May, being the fifth month of the year, is the average duration of menstruation, and the 28th day reflects the average length of a menstrual cycle.

Only 10 years ago, that menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) was buried under a thick layer of silence. Hardly anyone talked about the issue in public, and it was not mentioned in the media. All due to the taboos and stigma surrounding it. Since then, MH Day has taken place every year and, over the past 10 years, has grown into a global movement. In 2025, there were 25,026 pieces of media coverage, and the number of partner organizations has exceeded 1,315.

The joint mission: Together for a .

"Together" is crucial. No one can solve the menstruation-related challenges women and girls face alone. But together, we can. Weʻre proud to be part of the global movement advocating for a Period-Friendly World and strive to do so with everything we do, whether itʻs sending out Maʻi Care Kits, advocating at the legislature, or making free educational resources.

Mahalo nui to AAUW Honolulu inviting us to join their annual meeting and hosting a donation drive in our honor. During this special event, AAUW honored their 2025-26 undergraduate and scholarship awardees. They did a fantastic job at creating a space that celebrated community while uplifting women who have faced difficult challenges in life. Through their support and opportunities, these women are empowered to grow, succeed, and pursue their goals with confidence. AAUW has also provided scholarships to women entering career fields that are traditionally male dominated 💪🏾

Together, AAUW and everyone who attended donated 172 overnight pads, 594 regular pads, 120 tampons, and 174 pantiliners. Every single donation represents dignity and care for someone who may not otherwise have access to these essentials. We are deeply grateful to be surrounded by a community that continues to uplift and support one another.

We love seeing how our policy and advocacy directly impact the community. It makes everything worthwhile 🤎 Here’s a note from Llasmin Chaine, Executive Director of the Hawaiʻi State Commission on the Status of Women.

“I wanted to extend a HUGE mahalo to you, Mai Movement, and your fellow menstrual equity advocates! I walked into our state office tower (SOT) 4th floor bathrooms today and found a new free period product machine installed and new in-stall trash cans installed. Prior to today all we had were 1970s era used period product waste paper bags. I’ve attached photos.

DAGS has been working tirelessly to fix the SOT’s AC, the elevators, install AEDs, etc and it was such a pleasant surprise to see the completion of these new menstrual health additions to my government workspace.

My heart is filled with appreciation for your advocacy efforts and these supports. On behalf of myself and countless others, thank you very much”
