π³π΅π UPDATE: Tsum Valley Landslide and Flash Flood β October 13, 2026
We are continuing to follow the devastating flash flood that struck Lower Tsum Valley, Nepal, in the early morning hours of October 11.
π Five People Remain Missing
According to initial reports, five residents from the Chumchet area remain missing:
* Sonam Lama, 65
* Memmo Aji Lama, 59
* Som Bhuti Lama, 66
* Karma Lama, 73
* Dorje Lama, 41
They were reportedly tending livestock near the Ungilung stream when the disaster occurred.
Our hearts go out to their families, who are anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.
π Villagers Warned One Another and Saved Lives
One remarkable story emerging from this tragedy is how villagers helped save one another.
Residents in the upper valley noticed unusual river conditions and began calling people in villages farther downstream to warn them of the approaching flood.
Word spread from village to village, giving families precious time to escape to higher ground.
In some communities, residents reportedly had as little as 10 minutes between receiving a warning and the arrival of the floodwaters.
These early warnings from local villagers came before official government flood alerts reached some communities.
Their quick thinking, courage, and willingness to help their neighbors undoubtedly saved lives.
π« Update on Lamaguan Compassion School
Thankfully, our school and all our students remain safe.
However, some of our students are from Lower Tsum Valley, and we are still awaiting confirmation about the safety of their families.
The destruction of bridges and trails has also disrupted access to Upper Tsum Valley, raising concerns about future deliveries of food, medicine, and essential supplies.
We are grateful for the extraordinary resilience and compassion of these remote Himalayan communities.
Please continue to keep the five missing people, their families, and all those affected in your thoughts and prayers.
