Law enforcement officials, community honor fallen officers

HONOLULU (KHON2) — State, federal and county law enforcement officials gathered alongside community members Sunday for the Hawaiʻi Law Enforcement Memorial Remembrance Ceremony.

The ceremony honored the men and women who lost their lives while serving and protecting the people of Hawaiʻi.

Organizers said the memorial serves as a reminder of the sacrifices officers make every day to protect their communities.

“It’s something that we take for granted, the public takes for granted, that the police will be out there protecting the community,” said Kurt Kendro, Hawaii Law Enforcement Foundation Board Chair. “And a police officer, when they wake up in the morning, they don’t know if they’re coming home at the end of the day.”

Community leaders and law enforcement officials also gathered to unveil Officer Suzanne O’s memorial nameplate. O was a Maui police officer who was fatally shot last summer.

“So Police Week gives us all that opportunity to thank police officers for what they do and take pause and remember officers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our community,” Kendro said.

The annual memorial ceremony concludes National Police Week remembrance events held across the islands.

During the ceremony, officials paid tribute to 85 officers who were killed in the line of duty.

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu Hale and the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena will glow blue in recognition of National Police Week and to honor law enforcement officers across Hawaii and the country.

City officials announced the buildings will be illuminated from sundown on Sunday, May 10, through sunrise on Saturday, May 16.

Mayor Rick Blangiardi said the week is an opportunity for the community to reflect on the sacrifices officers make every day.

“National Police Week is a time for all of us to reflect on the courage, professionalism and sacrifice displayed every day by the men and women in law enforcement,” Blangiardi said. “We are deeply grateful to the officers who continue to serve and protect our communities and we honor the memory of those who gave their lives in the line of duty.”
