On October 11, 2009, St. Damien of Molokaʻi was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome, officially recognized as a saint of the universal Church.
⁣
Known for his selfless service to those suffering from Hansen’s disease at Kalaupapa, St. Damien devoted his life to bringing Christ’s love, compassion, and dignity to those who had been isolated from society. He ultimately contracted the disease himself and died in 1889 after 16 years of ministry on Molokaʻi.
⁣
Today, on the 17th anniversary of his canonization, we give thanks for the extraordinary witness of Hawaiʻi’s beloved saint and ask for his continued intercession.

Today, October 9, we celebrate the feast of St. John Henry Cardinal Newman!
⁣
A convert to Catholicism, Cardinal Newman was a renowned theologian, philosopher, and defender of the faith. In November 2025, Pope Leo XIV proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church, recognizing his profound contributions to Catholic theology and education.
⁣
Here in Hawaiʻi, his legacy lives on at the Newman Center–Holy Spirit Parish at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, which serves as both a parish community and a center for Catholic campus ministry.
⁣
May St. Newman's example inspire us to seek the truth, deepen our faith, and trust in God's guidance, one step at a time.

Today, the Church celebrates Our Lady of the Rosary, also known as Our Lady of Victory. In Hawaiian, Maria Lanakila means Mary of Victory, the title borne by the historic Catholic church in Lahaina.

Here in Hawaiʻi, several churches are dedicated to Our Lady under the title of the Holy Rosary, including communities on Maui and Hawaiʻi Island.
⁣
As we honor our Blessed Mother, may we grow in devotion to the Holy Rosary, meditating upon the mysteries of Christ’s life through the eyes of Mary.

On October 4, the Church celebrates St. Francis of Assisi, one of the most beloved saints in Christian history.
⁣
This year marks the 800th anniversary of the Transitus of St. Francis, his passage from this life to eternal life in 1226. May his witness of simplicity, joyful poverty, and wholehearted love of Christ inspire us to seek holiness and follow the Lord more faithfully.
⁣
Here in Hawaiʻi, St. Francis Church in Kalaupapa, Molokaʻi, is dedicated to his patronage.

Bishop Michael T.T. Castori, S.J. continued his Mass of Thanksgiving Island Tour on Kauaʻi on September 25, celebrating Mass at St. Catherine Church in Kapaʻa with clergy and faithful from across the island.
⁣
The celebration brought the Kauaʻi Catholic community together to welcome Bishop Castori, pray with him, and give thanks to God in the Eucharist as he begins his ministry as the sixth Bishop of Honolulu.
⁣
Please continue to pray for Bishop Castori and for the communities of our diocese as his Mass of Thanksgiving Island Tour continues.

Bishop Michael T. T. Castori, S.J. celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Joseph Church in Hilo on September 24, gathering with clergy and faithful from across East Hawaiʻi as part of his recently completed island tour.
⁣
The Mass offered the East Hawaiʻi Catholic community an opportunity to welcome Bishop Castori, celebrate the Eucharist together, and give thanks to God as he begins his ministry as the sixth Bishop of Honolulu.
⁣
We continue to give thanks for the faithful across our islands who welcomed Bishop Castori throughout his Mass of Thanksgiving Island Tour, and we ask for continued prayers for him and for our entire diocesan ʻohana.

Bishop Michael T. T. Castori, S.J. celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Kailua-Kona on September 23, gathering with clergy and faithful of West Hawaiʻi as part of his island tour.

The celebration was a joyful opportunity for the local Catholic community to welcome Bishop Castori, pray with him, and give thanks to God together in the Eucharist.
⁣
We give thanks for all the communities across our diocese who welcomed Bishop Castori throughout the tour, and we continue to pray for him as he begins his ministry as the sixth Bishop of Honolulu.

Today the Church celebrates St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church, known throughout the world as the “Little Flower.”
⁣
Though she lived a hidden life in the Carmelite monastery of Lisieux and died at only 24 years old, St. Thérèse showed the Church a simple path to holiness: her “Little Way” of trust, humility, and doing ordinary things with extraordinary love.
⁣
Here in Hawaiʻi, several of our churches are dedicated to her patronage, including our Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus in Honolulu, as well as St. Theresa Churches in Mountain View, Kekaha, and Kīhei.

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the Archangels.

Throughout the islands, our local Church has entrusted communities to the patronage of the Archangels—from St. Michael in Waialua and St. Michael the Archangel in Kailua-Kona, to the former St. Gabriel Mission Church in Keʻanae and St. Raphael Church in Kōloa.
⁣
May these holy Archangels, faithful messengers and servants of God, intercede for us and lead us ever closer to Christ.

Today we honor the Blessed Virgin Mary under the ancient title Stella Maris — Star of the Sea, a guiding star who always leads us to her Son, Jesus Christ.

Here in Hawaiʻi, we honor Our Lady under this title at Mary, Star of the Sea Church in Waiʻalae, while also remembering the former Star of the Sea Church in Kalapana on Hawaiʻi Island.
