We are very happy to share that the first four Digital Mustard Seed Resilience Hub Network starter kits were presented to community partners in Ebeye today.
The supplies were made possible through the collective efforts of CERENE student leaders and staff at Kapi‘olani Community College, the KCC Sustainability Club, and many generous supporters across Hawai‘i who contributed through the “Earth Day for Ebeye Spaghetti Dinner” fundraiser and educational event. Additional supplies were donated by Rotarians from the Rotary Satellite Club of International Peace–eClub 5010.
The starter kits included cots, first aid kits, CPR and AED training supplies (from the trainings organized with Pacific Allies - hosted by Chico Caballero and Kayla Rebluud, blankets, sleeping bags, nonperishable food, hand sanitizer, and tarps. These items will help community partners begin building locally led resilience hub resources that can support residents during emergencies and other times of need.
This is a modest beginning, but it reflects the meaning behind the Digital Mustard Seed name: a small seed, planted with care, can grow into something strong enough to provide shelter and support for many.
Today’s handoff included Father Johanness Kilmas, Father of the Parish and Director of Queen of Peace; Penaia Mateo, representing Queen of Peace Elementary School; Abon Arelong of KALGOV; Dr. Miku Lenentine of Kapi‘olani Community College and CERENE; and CERENE program peer mentors Hedsey Anjain Rowa and Zachary Tyler Gibson, both TBSE students and senior CERENE student leaders.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who donated, organized, transported, and received these supplies. This first handoff represents the beginning of a growing network rooted in partnership, preparedness, community leadership, and mutual support.
Also, this post would not be complete without big shout out to Harden Lelet and Dr. Gregg Nakano for dreaming the seed of the Digital Mustard Seed with us last year at Father Hacker School Sunday BBQ! Such a beautiful thing is beginning to grow. Also, Komoltata to Jessica Calep-Jacklick for her support and for allowing Penaia to stand in for you today. We would like to also express gratitude to Ramanty Chonggum of the College of the Marshall Islands and Paul Samuel who weren't able to join today but who are part of this work also as we work with them to develop an MOU with Kapi'olani CC to connect our students! :)
Let's keep it up for year 4 next year and see what's possible!
