The Hawaiʻi Pacific Foundation supports career pathway programs like HFD Explorers because they create clear access to high‑quality careers, strengthen our local workforce, and build long‑term economic resilience across our communities.

At HPF, we believe everyone deserves a fair shot at a meaningful career, one that not only drives individual purpose, but also uplifts those around them. Programs like HFD Explorers play a critical role in connecting youth to real‑world opportunities, hands‑on experiences, and industry‑aligned skills. Together, we help turn potential into opportunity.

Honolulu Fire Department Explorers has been a valued community partner since 2023. Our support has helped expand access across the program—from transportation to scholarships that support participants in pursuing college degrees and fire/EMS certifications. We’re grateful for this partnership and the opportunity to support youth in reaching their academic and career goals while strengthening Hawaiʻi’s workforce.

For more than four decades, the Honolulu Fire Department Explorers has been helping Hawaiʻi's youth develop the skills, character, and confidence to serve their communities. This program provides hands-on training in firefighting, emergency response, leadership, physical fitness, and community service under the mentorship of HFD firefighters, both active and retired.

Through these experiences, Explorers build discipline, teamwork, and resilience while forming deeper connections to their communities, learning what it means to lead with integrity and purpose.

At Hawaiʻi Pacific Foundation, we believe strong communities begin with strong leaders. Our partnership with HFD Explorers reflects a shared commitment to investing in Hawaiʻi's youth, creating pathways for personal and professional growth, and empowering the next generation to serve others with courage, kuleana, and aloha.

Hawai'i Pacific Foundationhas proudly supported HFD Explorers since 2023.

Why is it important to know who you are and where you come from?

Having a confident cultural identity creates a strong foundation, giving people a sense of belonging and responsibility that guides how they move through the world. When people understand their history, culture, values, and connections to community, they often carry a deeper sense of purpose and confidence.
That foundation helps them navigate challenges with resilience because they know they are part of something larger than themselves — connected to their kūpuna, ʻāina, ʻōlelo, and kanaka.

-

Through our partnership, The Hawaiʻi Pacific Foundation aims to build resilience from within by supporting Malama Honua Public Charter School initiatives grounded in cultural knowledge, shaped by community priorities, and designed to grow leadership across generations.

Supporting Hawaiian-focused education is important to The Hawaiʻi Pacific Foundation because it helps cultivate the next generation of leaders and community stewards. Regardless of where they go in life, haumāna carry with them the values, identity, and sense of responsibility rooted in a culturally grounded education — creating long-term resilience for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Mālama Honua students continue to demonstrate a strong sense of confidence in who they are, where they come from, and the kuleana they carry forward.

Malama Honua Public Charter School has been a community partner since 2024. Since the beginning of our partnership, we’ve invested in both immediate needs — such as the ʻAi Pono Program — and long-term initiatives that will support the future growth and sustainability of the school.

Inspired by Polynesian voyaging, Malama Honua Public Charter School is an award-winning, project-based school dedicated to developing the mindset of a navigator. As a Hawaiian-focused public charter school rooted in Waimānalo, they provide a rigorous learning environment grounded in ʻike kūpuna and guided by Hawaiian values.

Central to this foundation is Nā Lawena Hoʻokele, a set of guiding principles that cultivate not only academic growth, but confident cultural identity, civic responsibility, global perspective, initiative & risk-taking, environmental awareness, and communication & collaboration.

Utilizing waʻa and the legacy of voyaging as both foundation and compass, Mālama Honua empowers haumāna to navigate their learning, their lives, and their futures with purpose.

At Hawaiʻi Pacific Foundation, we believe lasting impact begins with community-rooted solutions grounded in culture, education, and ʻike Hawaiʻi. Our partnership with Mālama Honua reflects a shared commitment to empowering the next generation through place-based learning and leadership development.

Hoʻomaikaʻi Dr. Noelani Kong-Johnson!

This past week, Noe successfully defended her dissertation surrounded by colleagues, experts in the field, friends, and ʻohana.

Chairman, Walt Kaneakua shares, “It was an honor and pleasure to witness Noe’s defense of her dissertation based on years of research culminating in the addition of new knowledge in the field of neuroscience. Noe is an ascending, brilliant Hawaiian. This is simply in another step in a direction that will lift our communities to the highest level.”

Since 2022, Hawaiʻi Pacific Foundation has proudly supported Noe and her groundbreaking research exploring how individuals fluent in both English and Hawaiian may develop different neural architecture from their monolingual peers. Her work carries important implications for the future of bilingualism, education, and language revitalization here in Hawaiʻi.

We are so proud to celebrate this milestone and all of the hard work, passion, and purpose that brought you here. Wishing you continued success on this journey and all that lies ahead, Noe!
