Swipe to see how this bouldering Porites evermanni has grown over the past 3 years! This coral species is known to grow rather slowly at around 1-2 cm per year. We have observed much faster growth rates… Maybe conducting via direct transplant methodology utilizing broken damaged corals of opportunity promotes faster coral growth post transplantation, when compared to ex-situ methods. Did that make sense???

We hope and pray 🙏 that these baby we plant will one day reach the mass size and beauty of their parents…

It’s hard to fathom this is the case since these coral will need HUNDREDS OF YEARS to reach the sizes of the coral colony in the image below. With and their chances are slim… but we must not stop working in hopes that mankind will solve the above mentioned problems before we loose all the shallow water reef building corals. The struggle is real… 😬

Swipe to see how our emergency-rescue community based coral restoration is accelerating coral restoration via in-situ (in ocean) micro fragmentation fusion of corals. These broken corals were collected by volunteers and glued to the reef together. Without aid, they would’ve died. However, our volunteers gave these corals a second chance, and they have rewarded us all by rapidly, growing together to form an entirely new coral! Not only did we save Coral but these growth rates are double what we see in nature.

Our resident Hawaiian White Spotted Toby Puffer. This unique puffer fish is only found in Hawaii and due to our efforts, it now has a place to live. Every time we visit this coral transplant we find this adorable little house guest protecting the coral. What should we name it?

Did you know… Sea Fans are a type of soft coral? Interestingly, “mesophotic gorgonian corals originated multiple times from deep-sea octocoral lineages.” (Sanchez et al. 2021)

Deep sea corals provide a genetic refuge for shallow water coral. Each planetary mass extinction saw the complete elimination of shallow water corals, yet the deep water coral survived. And after every mass extinction these deep water corals evolved new species to inhabit the shallow waters. Shallow water coral has been wiped out FIVE times over the course of our planets history. We are now entering the SIXTH mass extinction. It will take millions of years for these corals to re-evolve from their deep water ancestors to re-populate our reefs. That’s why we cannot let our current reefs perish!
