Hurricane Lala has devastated communities across the Hawaiian islands. More than 100 homes on Hawaiʻi Island have been swept away by flood water, critical infrastructure is estimated to have sustained hundreds of millions of dollars in damage, and ongoing power outages have left thousands disconnected — all threatening the livelihoods of workers in our community.

Workers and their families need our immediate kōkua.

HWC’s Communications & Development Manager, Jules Davis, joined leaders at The Resiliency Initiative to present at the International Association of Emergency Manager’s (IAEM) Region 9 Symposium in Honolulu.

The presentation highlighted the importance of partnership & collaboration between sectors, and showcased HWC’s ongoing organizing work in Waialua, including organizing worker leaders to launch the Filipino Farmers & Farm Workers Association of Waialua (3FWA).

As disasters increase in frequency & intensity, HWC emphasizes the importance of building disaster preparedness & resilience that is driven by community insight, knowledge, and power.

The HWC proudly joined Hawaiʻi Nurses' Association, OPEIU Local 50 Wahiawā nurses in delivering a petition to Queen’s Health Systems management, demanding equality and for them to uphold the same standards of patient safety as the other Queen’s facilities located just miles away.

Along with many other community leaders, legislators, and workers, our Executive Director, Kami Yamamoto, shared her own personal story of support for the Wahiawā nurses.

Retain, recruit, and respect Wahiawā’s nurses! 💛
