Throw back Thursday!

Here’s a photo from the 1946 Sugar Strike. 28,000 sugar workers walked off the plantation— striking for better wages, and more importantly, dignity. Formerly and deliberately divided by race, ethnicity, language… they organized under the ILWU Local 142, standing together on common ground for a common cause. The Big Five had never faced an uprise like this.

The workers won, not only changing their paychecks, but the socioeconomic structure of Hawai’i— to better the lives of working people and their families across the islands.

At the Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes & Wetlands Refuge on Maui’s north shore, Maui Division members joined over 70 community volunteers for our first-ever land care work day. Pulling weeds, restoring native plants, and reconnecting with the ʻāina that sustains us all.

“Our union exists because previous generations built it for us. So we are building things for future generations now.” — Richard Van Barringer, Grand Wailea

The next work day is Saturday, April 11 at the Waiheʻe fishpond. All Maui members are encouraged to join. 🤙

Meet Joy Enomoto, our New Archivist-Librarian!

From being raised on books, union values, and two families shaped by plantation labor, Joy found an intersection of her interests and history in the local’s archives— a place where every single thread of her life came together. And now that she’s here, she wants our members to come find their history too!📖

Effective February 1, 2026, approximately 3,800 ILWU Local 142 members across 12 units now have access to retirement medical coverage.

No more choosing between retiring and keeping your healthcare. No more draining your savings just to stay insured. Just dignity — the kind our members have always deserved, and most significant advancement in retirement security in modern Local 142 history. It belongs to every single member who never stopped fighting for it.💪
