Kalo Fest 2026 recap 🌱 (a month later and we’re still not over it!!)

Such a powerful day to hui up in support of our local food systems and communities. From donations for families impacted by the Kona low to talking story about policy, this was community care in action.

Bills we highlighted:
SB2109 – improving statewide emergency preparedness + communication so communities are better supported during disasters

SB2925 – would have recognized niu (coconut) as culturally significant and supported protection from threats like the coconut rhinoceros beetle

SB890 – aimed to strengthen transparency + labeling for poi

SB2320 – building pathways for local youth into agriculture + agtech careers

Mahalo to the KEY Project and everyone who made this space possible.

Let’s keep showing up!

🚨SUPPORT NEEDED! Testimony for HB2208 HD1 is due Tuesday 3/24 by 1:40pm!

➡️ Go to capitol.hawaii.gov to submit testimony in support of HB2208 HD1! Late testimony is accepted.

HB2208 HD1 establishes and funds the Hawaiʻi Farm to Families Program to help address food insecurity throughout our island communities.

This program…
🥕 helps to bridge the gap between our local producers and those in need of nutritious, fresh, and high quality food.
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 supports our food access resources (like our foodbanks) who can better address hunger in underserved communities.
🧑‍🌾 offers a reliable market for local producers to help keep money local and support Hawaiʻi’s agriculture economy.
🤝 assists in emergency food preparedness.

The extent to which people need food in Hawaiʻi is far greater than what many of us could ever realize‼️

After the Kona storms, many of our communities do not have the capacity to be civically engaged during this time. If you do have the capacity, it is important that we step up as advocates to make sure our communities’, farmers’, and families’ voices are still heard.

As Hawai‘i Food+ Policy, our advocacy efforts are deeply guided by the policy intentions we thoughtfully set at the beginning of the 2026 legislative session 🗣️💬

With every testimony submitted, outreach piece created, and conversation had, our policy intentions are recognizably woven throughout 🍌🐟🌱🥥

We organized our intentions into 4 pillars that reflect our commitment to supporting a sustainable, resilient, and equitable food system in Hawai‘i that centers community, nourishment, and ʻāina 🧑‍🌾🤝🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒

SB2925 is making its way through the legislature! As of February 11, the Senate Committees on AEN and WLA recommended the measure be passed with amendments.

SB2925 is a measure that would:
🥥 recognize coconut as a source of food and water
🥥 recognize coconut trees as a cultural treasure of Hawai’i
🥥 allow coconut seed banks
🥥 require transparency regarding pesticide use on coconut trees
🥥 incentivize the use of non-toxic methods when managing coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB)

Call to Action: This bill still needs to be heard by the Senate Committee on Ways and Means and the Senate Committee on Commerce and Consumer Protection!

Here’s how you can help:
📣 Email Senate Committee Chairs, Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz ([email protected]) and Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole ([email protected]) urging them to schedule a public hearing
📣 Prepare your testimony ahead of the hearing

That’s a wrap, folks! Mahalo nui for all of your support this year 🎉💜

While our Food+ team is already in full swing preparing for the next legislative session and our incoming intern cohort…
We wanted to take a moment to reflect on how our impact has grown in 2025 and how we have evolved as an organization.

🥥 Advocacy can be challenging as it requires a lot of time and dedication, oftentimes without immediate reward.
🍌 For us, we don’t just measure our impact in the number of bills passed, but also through outreach, education, and engagement.
🥭 Our goal is to transform Hawai‘i’s food system by empowering and educating the next generation of food system advocates.

We have so many more exciting plans, goals, and opportunities for 2026, so stay tuned for all there is to come!

Mahalo for being on this journey with us and for your dedication to creating a more sustainable and resilient food system in Hawai‘i 🫂🤝💚

What if our waste became nourishment? What if resilience meant reclaiming the land from the ground up?

This final post in our doomscrolling series dives into the environmental and ecological side of food policy — composting systems, invasive species, and the future of Hawaiʻi’s agricultural resilience. 🌱🌍

These are the last set of op-eds from our 2025 cohort of Food+ interns. We’re incredibly proud of the stories they told, the questions they raised, and the vision they offered for Hawaiʻi’s food systems.

💚 A new cohort begins this January, and we can’t wait to see what they create, challenge, and grow. Stay tuned!
