As AAPI Heritage Month comes to a close, I wanted to reflect on my serve initiative, Diabetes in Polynesia, and the importance of continuing conversations surrounding health within our communities. A huge thank you to the American Diabetes Association in Hawaiʻi for inviting me to the Step Out Diabetes event and for bringing together so many incredible organizations dedicated to education, prevention, and support.
It was so inspiring to see so many community resources in one place, including Kaiser Permanente, National Kidney Foundation, The Queen’s Health Systems, the Hawaii State Department of Health, American Medical Response, Diagnostic Laboratory Services, HMAA, WIC Hawaiʻi, and organizations focused on diabetes management technology and support. Seeing so many people come together with the shared goal of improving health outcomes for our communities was incredibly impactful.
Across many Polynesian and Pacific Islander communities, diabetes continues to affect countless families. Events like this are such an important reminder that education, early prevention, access to healthcare, and community support truly matter. Through Diabetes in Polynesia, my goal is to continue advocating for healthier lifestyles, spreading awareness, and encouraging people to take charge of their health one step at a time.
Especially during AAPI Heritage Month, it’s important that we continue uplifting conversations surrounding health disparities and work together toward healthier futures for our communities 🤍💫
