Thailand 🇹🇭

School is over, most of the children have gone home for the next few months. We as a team are wrapping up our time here and will be leaving in the next few weeks. As I look back over the last year, the word that comes to mind is thankful. I'm so thankful for the opportunity I had to work at New Vision, and I'm beyond thankful to know each of these precious souls and for the impact they've had on my life.

Three women left their village on foot after it was completely destroyed. On February 24, they packed what little they could and started walking, just hoping to reach somewhere a little less dangerous.

For seven days they moved slowly through mud and damaged roads, covering about 14 kilometers (around 9 miles). One of the women could barely walk, so much of the way she was pushed in a wheelbarrow. They slept in broken houses and whatever shelter they could find along the way, with drones flying overhead.

Eventually they made it to another village where they found an empty house that neighbors said they could stay in. They had been there for two days when our team was able to reach them, and evacuate all three grandmothers to a transit center.

During the drive they shared a little about what they had left behind. One woman said her house had been hit multiple times. Volunteers had repaired it before, but it was recently struck again. Another woman told us her home burned, destroying everything inside, including all of her documents.

After seven days of walking and pushing a wheelbarrow through mud just to reach a place where evacuation was possible, today they are finally somewhere safer.

Ukraine 🇺🇦

The line is getting long. It’s still freezing cold. Early that morning, the blasts from the drone strikes had shattered hundreds of windows in the nearby apartment buildings. Now the families were supplied with OSB and waiting in line for us to cut it to size.
I can only imagine how they feel. They’ve endured the effects of the war for so long, and lately constant power outages in extreme cold. This particular morning, they woke up to their windows being blown out.
Some of them shout in frustration and try to cut ahead of the others. I don’t blame them; the circumstances are brutal. Others are patient and so thankful for the help, which is refreshing to see among all this destruction.
I’m just thankful to be a small part of their lives. I pray our work can bring glory to God, and they can put their trust in Him, even as everything around them is torn apart.

Thailand 🇹🇭

The school year is coming to a close this week, and with it come exams and graduation. We’ve also had our final kids’ night and teen night — such sweet evenings filled with fun activities and worshiping together one last time. And now this weekend brings the goodbyes.
Many of the kids will go home to parents, family, or guardians, if they have them. Others will stay here and not go home at all.
Pray for the children as they return home and for the situations they are walking back into, whether good or difficult. And pray especially for the children who remain here, who may miss their families or have no families at all.

Thailand 🇹🇭

In December we started a running club at the home. What we expected to be a small group of 10 runners, turned into 50 runners. Three days a week found this dedicated group of 50 kids running down the street at 5:30 am. We lost a few runners along the way, but at the end of our program we still had 40 kids.
After weeks of training, we held a race to choose 10 runners and take them to an official race. Last week we had the opportunity to take our 10 qualifiers to a race in Chiang Rai, and the excitement was high. It was a proud moment when three of our boys placed 1st-3rd in the race.
We had an evening of mookata to celebrate with everyone that made it to end of the running club.

Thailand 🇹🇭

As we reflect back over our visit to Thailand there are several things that really impacted us!

We really noticed the impact the team has made spiritually and relationally. We noticed that a lot of love, connection, and care was shown to the children since we got involved in the home and we believe the children are getting a taste of hope, love, and life as the children are loved on.
Hearing from the team about the positive changes they have witnessed in many of the children over time was incredibly inspiring.

Our team also has what we call teen night where we have worship and activities for the teens for an hour one evening a week. This has also lead to now doing an hour each week with the younger children. We were there for one evening and it was an impactful moment to see so much enthusiasm from all the children that were there to pour out their hearts in worship.
We realized we probably have no idea all the impact this has on the children.
I would love to see the impact this all has on the children 10, 20, and 30 years from now. I also reminded myself that we are called to sow seeds and let God bring the increase.

I did ask myself the question: how can we do our part in cultivating and preparing the soil for the seed to sprout and spring forth into new life?

We were impressed with the impact we did see in our short time in visiting the home. And I count it a privilege to be able to be a part of what is happening at the home in Thailand.

Thank you to each one of you for your support, whether prayer or financial, in making this mission possible and a reality to be a part of. Thank you!

This is part of the reality of evacuations. Some days many people are evacuated. Other days, like this one, they do not go according to plan, and to our human minds can seem almost futile. Yet we know that we are here for a purpose, and pray that every moment would be an opportunity for God’s name to be glorified.

Thailand 🇹🇭

“Teacher, are you really going home to America?” “When will you leave?” “Will you come back?” I’ve been hearing these questions a lot lately from the students here. We only have a couple more weeks until the end of the semester, when many of them will return home for school break, and our team will be packing up and heading home. It’s going to be hard to leave so many precious little friends, and I wonder if I will ever see them again…what will they be like in a year from now? Who will they grow up to be? I don’t know, but I know Someone who does. I hope every one of them will get to know Him too.

Recently we helped clean up after a strike at an apartment building. Us girls didn’t have much to do, so once the windows in the first apartment were boarded up, we started sweeping up the broken glass scattered all over her apartment.
When we finished, she asked if we could help her walk to a nearby store. So we each took an arm, and off we went—very slowly—down the street. We laughed as she’d gently tug us one way or the other to show us where to go, and at one point she stopped just to point out some beautiful trees. Eventually we made it to the meat market, and then on to the bus stop where she caught her ride.

Another day, we spent time at the shelter playing with a young boy, helping him practice his math and English, tending to an older man’s injury, chatting with other evacuees, and enjoying some delicious soup one of them had made.
Though it can feel long at times when there are off days with not much planned, those quiet stretches have also made room for small, “unimportant” acts of service—the ones that have ended up being such a blessing to me and where deeper connections are formed. May we never forget that no job is too small or insignificant to serve faithfully.

Q&A

Q.Is it possible to join your team without taking the training, given that I already hold many of the certifications typically covered in it?

A: While we give our graduates first chance at deployment with us, especially on international projects, we occasionally do deploy individuals who have not taken the training. This very much depends on the volunteer need, the experience, specific skills and how well we know the person in question. The last part is probably the most important to us, since we typically deploy small teams to places that are often unstable and unsafe.

One big benefit of taking the training is that it gives you the opportunity to get to know us as an organization and individually as staff, and we also get to know you much better. Our heart is to give our volunteers and graduates the best possible experience and opportunity to succeed on the field and the better we know them, the better this usually works out.

Some certifications you already hold would not need to be repeated during the training.

If you’re looking to volunteer with us stateside, the training is not a requirement. Even if you’re hoping to deploy internationally, deploying with us stateside is actually a great way to get to know us better and for us to have some working experience with you. Based on that, we may deploy you sooner than otherwise.
