The Time to Act is Now...

The ecosystem of our planet is at a grave and critical juncture. The threat of a major climate shift is no longer a looming, possible threat of what might take place in the far-off future. More accurately, it is an imminent one—one that is happening right now. As water sources continue to dry up and millions of people all over the world struggle to access clean, safe water at an exponentially higher rate than ever before, the urgent need for immediate as well as long-term, sustainable water solutions is indisputable.

Keeping this escalating water crisis at the forefront of the Himalayan Institute’s humanitarian focus and efforts for 2023, our team in North West Cameroon has undertaken several Clean Water Projects in the various communities we serve. We’re excited to share their most recent progress updates!

The Himalayan Institute’s humanitarian initiatives in Cameroon and India depend upon the love and support of our donors. The progress and development we have seen over the years could not have been possible without you, and for this we are truly grateful. Together, we are creating peaceful, flourishing communities throughout Cameroon and India. 🙏🏼

“Without clean water, things won’t move. I can’t cook. I can’t wash things. So water is really, really essential. It’s one of the very basic necessities that people really need in order to be functional and productive. Consistent access to water will ensure a family is productive, and that it will then be able to flourish.”

Among so many other informative, enlightening facts and acknowledgments shared in the recent panel discussion held with key members of the Himalayan Institute’s Humanitarian team, these were the words that made the most lasting impression. The panel’s facilitator, Jeff Abella, Director of the Himalayan Institute’s Humanitarian Projects and Managing Director of HI Cameroon (HIC), had asked Eucharia Kuoh, Lead Health Expert for the HIC team and a full-time working mom, if she could speak to the access, or rather, the lack of access to clean water, and how it can change the dynamic in a family, including the dynamic in economic outcomes for that family. Her response was simple, yet saturated with wisdom, and thoroughly eye-opening.

"Without clean water, things won’t move."

Excited to share this India Relief Fund Update from Ishan Tigunait. This fund was initially created as a response to the dire need for assistance due to Covid in the surrounding villages of the Himalayan Institute's campus in Khajuraho, India.

Some of the highlights to tune in for:

Phase 1 complete: Immediate medical supplies, water and food relief provided.

A key discovery from Phase 1: Long-term water security is crucial for the inhabitants of this area due to it being in a "rain shadow district"—an area where rain clouds are unable to reach, resulting in a persistent state of drought for the area.

Once the immediate needs of Phase 1 were met, this sparked a dialogue: What else could this community really use?

Phase 2: In order to provide long-term water support, construction of a community well became the focus of the Phase 2 project. Traditional water finders were invited to help find the best location. Watch the video for more fascinating details about how these water finders use coconuts in their process!

Construction of the open well will soon be complete, providing the community with a permanent year-round water source, continuing to nourish our global brothers and sisters of this community.

Prolonged nature of persistent heatwaves also causes a drop in human resiliency, causing more health issues emerge.

The Himalayan Institute therefore has made an open-ended, long-term commitment to providing clean water to this area on a daily basis.

Phase 3 will soon begin: Now that the Covid mortality impact is mostly diminished, we have set out to identify other specific long-term contributions we can make to positively affect the underlying social and environmental needs that still exist.

Beyond the immediate needs of food and water: The communities long-term needs come back to health and education. This is the future of our India Relief fund n(Phase 3).

Coming this Winter 2022/Spring 2023: We hope to break ground on a new community center in the area—to house a sustained effort in providing literacy and public health education, primarily for children; weaving in elements of environmental sustainability education as well.

We are so excited to continue these efforts in Phase 3 and and send out deepest gratitude to all of our donors and supporters along the way.

More to come! Stay tuned!!

Check out this amazing clip of our partners in India working to build a well for the community of Khajuraho.

Every single brick is being laid by hand. All bricks and mortar are lowered down by a manual pulley system. The project will take about 80,000 - 100,000 bricks!

Gratitude to all for your donations that are making clean drinking water a reality for the people of this community so dear to us.

Before & After!! --- Water Well Project in Khajuraho

BEFORE: Our team in India employed a local water finder to identify locations at our HI Community Center land where water may be underground.

AFTER: We found our spot! An excavator was engaged to dig a hole that is 20’-25’ wide and 20’ deep, beyond which point requires blasting the rock and digging it out with a combination of an excavator, chain pulley, and manual digging by hand.

The whole team is inspired, optimistic, and sends its gratitude for the opportunity to execute this vision.

This has been an amazing process to witness, and we look forward to updating you again soon!
