Mission Statement: Second Hand Sanctuary -Rescuing Pigs, Inspiring Compassion, Changing Lives

At Second Hand Sanctuary, our mission is to be a haven of love and care for pigs in need, while also fostering awareness, understanding, and compassion for these remarkable animals. We are dedicated to providing rescue pigs with forever homes filled with warmth and security, educating the public about pi

g behavior and welfare, and extending a helping hand to pig owners seeking support. Our Core Values:

Compassion: We hold a deep reverence for all living beings, especially pigs who often go unrecognized for their intelligence and sensitivity. Through our compassionate actions, we aim to inspire empathy and respect for pigs as individuals with unique needs and personalities. Education: We believe that knowledge is a catalyst for change. By educating people about pig behavior, care, and the challenges they face, we empower individuals to make informed decisions and promote the well-being of pigs in their lives. Advocacy: Pigs deserve a life free from suffering and exploitation. Through advocacy and awareness campaigns, we strive to improve the lives of all pigs by addressing misconceptions and advocating for ethical treatment. Community: Second Hand Sanctuary is a community of like-minded individuals who share a common bond: our love for pigs. We foster connections, provide resources, and offer a safe space for pig lovers to come together, learn, and grow. What We Do:

Rescue & Sanctuary: We rescue pigs from various backgrounds and provide them with a loving forever home. Our sanctuary is a place where each pig can flourish, showcasing their natural behaviors and forming meaningful connections with our team and other animals. Education & Outreach: Through workshops, online resources, and interactive experiences, we offer insights into pig behavior, needs, and welfare. Our goal is to debunk myths, inspire curiosity, and encourage responsible pig ownership. Support & Assistance: We extend our expertise to pig owners who need guidance, whether it's about pig care, behavior challenges, or creating enriching environments. By offering assistance, we strive to create happier and healthier lives for pigs in homes across the community. Advocacy & Collaboration: We collaborate with animal welfare organizations, advocacy groups, and educators to amplify our impact. Together, we work towards a world where pigs are valued and treated with the respect they deserve. Join Us in Making a Difference:

Second Hand Sanctuary stands as a beacon of hope for pigs in need and a source of knowledge for all who seek to understand and protect these incredible creatures. We invite you to join our mission in rescuing, educating, and supporting pigs, one step at a time. Together, let's create a future where pigs thrive in the embrace of compassion and knowledge.

Wilbur ♥️.

Wilbur is one of the younger pigs here at SHS, and he’s been with us for about seven months now. He arrived as a tiny little guy at just 3 months old, and watching him grow into a “big” pig has been so much fun.

He’s a sweet boy with just a touch of spice to his personality- especially when someone has the audacity to tell him “no!” Wilbur definitely has opinions, and he’s not afraid to share them.

One of my favorite things about seeing these babies grow up here is watching their personalities emerge. They learn they’re safe, they’re loved, and they can simply be themselves. Whether that means being outgoing, shy, cuddly, independent, or a little spicy, we love them exactly as they are. And Wilbur? He’s perfectly, wonderfully Wilbur.

Norman ♥️

Our sweet Normie has come such a long way.

When a kind person found him on the side of a rural road (one where animals, both living and dead, are far too often dumped) he was just a baby, about 10 months old. He was frightened, alone, and suffering from a severe case of mange that had led to a secondary skin infection.

Fast forward to today, and you’d hardly recognize him as the same pig! After medicated baths, mange treatments, antibiotics, and plenty of good food and care, Norman is thriving. His skin has healed, his coat has come back beautifully, and his sweet personality is beginning to shine through!

Looking at him now, you’d never know what a rough start he had. Stories like Norman’s are why we do what we do. Every animal deserves the chance to be safe, healthy, and loved. ♥️

Pepper-Anne. ♥️
Every herd has a personality type, and Pepper-Anne is our very own Eeyore. She’s sweet, gentle, and just a little bit convinced that life is happening to her personally.

Leo ♥️. I cannot handle this level of cute! It’s simply too much. Someone should really regulate piglet adorableness because Leo is clearly operating well above the legal limit.

Bryn ♥️. Little Miss Independent. She doesn’t need anyone’s help, has her own plans, and is quite certain she knows better than the rest of us. She tackles life with confidence, a little bit of sass, and absolutely zero concern for anyone else’s opinion.

In other words, she’s 100% pig. 😉

If I had a dollar for every time I asked my pigs, “Why are you so cute?!” we could probably feed the entire sanctuary for a month. 😉

Have house pigs, they said.

It’ll be “fun,” they said.

They forgot to mention:
- Every snack belongs to the pigs.
- Personal space becomes a distant memory.
- The couch is no longer yours.
- You will have an audience for every trip to the kitchen.
- Nothing hits the floor without immediate investigation.
- Your floors will never be clean again
- You will regularly find yourself negotiating with a 150-pound toddler who has absolutely no interest in compromise.

Would I do it all over again?

Unfortunately, yes. 🥰

Ever feel judged?

Around here, it’s impossible not to. The turkeys are always around, standing off to the side, silently observing every decision you make like they’re holding a board meeting about your life choices.

Forgot to bring snacks? Judged.
Took too long filling the water trough? Judged.
Tripped over a bucket in front of everyone? Especially judged.

I don’t know what they’re discussing, but I’m fairly certain I’m never getting a favorable performance review from the turkey committee. 🙄
