Augustine as one of three regional offices, collectively known as Diocesan Catholic Charities, and under the charter of the Catholic Charities Bur

eau, Inc. It was created primarily to relieve the burden on Catholic parishes which were struggling to meet the needs of the poor in their communities at the end of World War II. Its mission was and is driven by the Gospel mandate (Mt 25) to serve those most in need among us as manifested in Christ’s corporal works of mercy (i.e., feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, house the homeless, clothe the naked, visit the sick/homebound, visit the imprisoned, bury the dead). Incorporated as Catholic Charities Diocese of St. on June 24, 1968 under the auspices of the Diocese of St. Petersburg upon its establishment, Catholic Charities [has evolved under seven Executive Directors and five Bishops (McLaughlin, Larkin, Favalora, Lynch, and Parkes), and] presently serves the poor and vulnerable - regardless of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, country of origin, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status - within the Diocese’s 5-county area (Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando and Citrus) with the goal of lessening their suffering and where possible returning them to the path of self-sufficiency. We operate three broad umbrella Ministries of Mercy: Foundations of Life, Shelters of Hope, and Friends in Need. Through these ministries, we served over 15,100 individuals and provided over 200,000 meals last year. Services included but were not limited to food and shelter for the homeless (e.g., Pinellas Hope), affordable housing for the poor, the elderly, migrant farmworker families, and those suffering from HIV/AIDS and other disabilities, respite care and medical screening, immigration, citizenship and refugee services, pregnancy and adoption assistance, and disaster relief.

Catholic Charities - Ministries of Mercy

Since our founding in 1945, our mission has been and continues to be driven by the Gospel mandate (Mt 25) to serve those most in need among us as manifested in Christ’s corporal works of mercy (i.e., feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, house the homeless, clothe the naked, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, bury the dead). To this end we operate under three umbrella ministries: Foundations of Life, Friends in Need, and Shelters of Hope.

Through these ministries, we served over 15,100 individuals and provided over 200,000 meals last year. Services included but were not limited to food, shelter and clothing for the homeless (e.g., Pinellas Hope), affordable housing for the poor, the elderly, migrant farm worker families, those suffering severe mental illness, and those suffering from HIV/AIDS and other disabilities, respite care for those suffering from Alzheimer's and other memory-loss illnesses and their caregivers, medical screening for those without insurance, immigration, citizenship and refugee services, pregnancy and adoption assistance, and disaster relief.
