And that’s a wrap for Civics Camp!
Today was “Give Back to the Community Day” and the campers started a community garden and packed up and stored the camp supplies!
Lots of lesson learned today! Like how to properly load a wagon of supplies or how to wrap a hose up! It is wonderful watching kids learn in a basically consequence free environment how they’re supposed to do stuff. They learned today!!
The garden is amazing and full of donated plants from such a wonderful community!
And “wonderful community” is an understatement! We asked for shovels…. We got shovels… we got so many shovels!!!!
Thank you Old Homosassa. Thank you Homosassa Civic Club. Thank you campers. Thank you volunteers!!
This camp is a group effort and gets better every year!!

Field trip day!
Once again Monkey Island Adventure at Monkey Bar at Monkey Island Riverside Resort hooked us up with golf carts to take a tour of Old Homosassa and picked up some trash while traveling around.
Campers purchased stamps and mailed their thank you letters and post cards. Our wonderful Post Office Lady let the campers “check their mail”.
We stopped at the Water Tower and the Sugar Mill Ruins and the Museum Cafe! Mr. Anderson let the campers print a postcard cover too!
We ended our tour at the Old Homosassa Heritage Park.
Such an awesome day!

After amending and adding new laws the cities were put to the test! Only one survived! Mother Nature was harsh. The kids learned A LOT about city planning and why buildings have to meet certain codes and regulations!

We were also visited by some elected officials and a representative for the county!
The kids drilled Joe Adams of Citrus County Mosquito Control District on the types of mosquitoes. He brought George Deskins to answers those questions! Joe did help the kids understand better what his position on the Board entailed!
Sandra Counts was questioned by the campers almost constantly while she was there. Lots to learn about the School Board!
Deardra Wilcox from the Homosassa Special Water District Board dropped some history on the campers on how the district was founded.
Veronica Kampschroer came as a representative for the County and was a wealth of information for the campers. The commissioners were in their budget meeting and were unable to join us.

07/21/2026

Each group at Civics Camp today developed their state and city more. They were given a population and a tax amount and a budget from the taxes to construct a new city. Those cities will be tested against natural disasters tomorrow!
Each state introduced a law, but only two passed. Tomorrow they will be allowed to revisit the laws and make amendments as needed by the wishes of the “people”.
We were also visited by the Citrus County Fire Rescue! The campers were able to ask lots of questions and check out the truck.

We are back at it for our last week of the summer!!
We have a very… enthusiastic group of kids for this week of Civics Camp!
Today they learned about the history of the flags that have represented our Country from a veteran and former History teacher. Greg from The Bridge 4 Veterans, Inc. showed them how to raise and lower the flag and fold it properly.

After looking through our constitution, they started drafting camp laws that will be voted on tomorrow. They are also creating their states and their state flags.

Tomorrow they will get the tax money brought in by their population and use it to create a new city center. Each state will have a different budget that correlates to their population!

Today marked the final day of our first week of Civics Camp, and we wrapped up the week with Give Back to the Community Day!

Our campers spent an hour and a half cleaning up around town, collecting five full bags of trash, two tires, and even the kitchen sink. Their hard work made a visible difference in our community and showed what can happen when young people take pride in where they live. Thank you Monkey Island Adventure at Monkey Bar at Monkey Island Riverside Resort for ONCE AGAIN providing use with golf carts to complete our projects and make this camp even more memorable.

After the cleanup, everyone returned to camp to cool off and enjoy a well earned lunch of hot dogs. The campers then painted rocks before taking golf carts around town to hide them in parks and other public places for local children and families to discover.

From serving their community to spreading a little unexpected joy, these campers demonstrated the values we've been discussing all week, service, responsibility, and civic engagement. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm, teamwork, and willingness to make a difference.

The future looks bright with young people like these who are growing into engaged, informed, and caring citizens. Thank you to all of our campers and volunteers for making this week's Civics Camp such a success!

Field trip day!
Thank you Monkey Island Adventure at Monkey Bar at Monkey Island Riverside Resort for the rides!! We took golf carts to the Post Office to buy stamps, mail thank you letter, and “check out mail”. Biiiig thank you to Michelle at the Post Office for being so kind and accommodating to our adventure!
After the Post Office we went to the Sugar Mill Ruins and discussed some of the History of Homosassa.
We went to the Homosassa Water Tower to discuss its current role in our community. Even though it no longer serves its purpose to distribute water, it does house antennas for the Homosassa Special Water District to monitor meters!
We ended our trip at the Old Homosassa Heritage Park where the campers chilled and fished and ate some mozzarella sticks from Sweet Sassa and enjoyed the community park!!
