Anew: Building Beyond Violence and Abuse Our agency has grown and evolved over our 40 years of providing services to those impacted by domestic violence.

Domestic Violence services offered include: 24- hour hotline, crisis intervention & emergency shelter, counseling for individuals and children, court and medical advocacy, prevention, abuser intervention, and training. In 1980, our founders developed South Suburban Family Shelter in hopes of creating a permanent on-site shelter for those experiencing domestic violence. While an admirable aspiratio

n, it was unable to come to fruition, due to a number of factors. The agency quickly moved away from the idea of strictly being a long-term shelter, and focused more on providing orders of protection, a hotline, and then counseling, short-term emergency shelter, and spreading education and awareness of domestic violence. In short, the original South Suburban Family Shelter evolved quickly into something much, much more than the initial envisioned shelter services. In 2019, our board of directors embarked on the rebranding process. We held focus groups with our constituents, clients, and the community at large as well as administering several surveys to garner feedback. The feedback we received was in line with what we were also feeling: our name did not relay the services we provide and to who. The change to Anew: Building Beyond Violence and Abuse reflects the evolution of services that we provide. The new name encapsulates all we do to help those impacted by domestic violence and more accurately describes the work we do to educate the community and stop domestic violence in its tracks.

Anew is excited to announce its first annual day-long conference in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

This year’s focus will highlight how we as a community can build beyond our biases when working with both individuals who have experienced harm and those who have chosen harm, in efforts to provide better care to those impacted by domestic violence.

Participants will also learn valuable information on responding to disclosures of abuse, while being equipped with realistic strategies to build and maintain appropriate self-care.

In the words of Tom Petty - some days are diamonds, some days are rocks….

Well it’s been a whole week of rocks for an awful lot of our friends. The aftermath of the tornado that ripped through Homewood on Monday has been excruciatingly difficult for so many. As I drove through the neighborhoods yesterday and saw the piles and piles of debris, the massive trees cut up into chunks and lining the driveways and heard the constant hum of generators, the tears welled up quickly. While I didn’t personally experience any of the losses this week, I felt them. It was heartbreaking to see the devastation of the place I will always consider to be home.

Any sane person would have looked at the situation on Monday night and just cancelled this pie sale. But without a sane person at the helm, we forged ahead. For those of you who have never ordered a pie from me, I need to say this - the level of chaos/changes/mix-ups that happened this week are not my norm. I really do usually run a well-oiled machine. This week we just ran out of oil. Thank you all for your patience. In the end, with the help of Kim, Susan and Melissa, we were able to bake and deliver 48 pies - which translated to an $800 donation to Anew: Building Beyond Violence and Abuse for their Back to School Angels drive.

And that was the driving force behind doing this sale in spite of the challenges. Timing. My schedule, the availability of blueberries and school starting fairly soon meant if we were going to make this annual donation it was this week or not at all. And that just couldn’t be. Of the many, donations we make each month, this one sits very close to my heart. I just couldn’t skip it.

So thank you - as always - for your support and your patience. And for helping make this donation possible. As Tom says…you’ve got a heart so big…..
