Meet Laura, a nurse in the hematology/oncology Clinic at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge. She was recently recognized as Advocate Children’s Hospital’s July 2026 DAISY Award honoree for the extraordinary compassion, comfort and hope she brings to patients and families during some of their most challenging moments.

Her nomination describes how Laura provided a sense of calm and reassurance when a family received the life-changing diagnosis of their son’s cancer. Through her warmth, kindness and genuine compassion, she helped them feel heard, supported and confident as they navigated an uncertain journey.

More than a year later, Laura continues to make a lasting impact through the meaningful relationships she builds, the exceptional care she provides, and the unwavering support she offers every step of the way. The family shared that she helped transform one of the most painful chapters of their lives into one marked by connection, compassion and hope.

Congratulations Laura and thank you for making such a meaningful difference in the lives of your patients and families! šŸ’›šŸŒ¼

Providing comfort and companionship 🐾

Duo Dog Drake, Advocate Children’s Hospital’s facility dog in Park Ridge, is always there for our patients to brighten the day, provide cuddles and serve as a furry companion during hospital visits.

Laila, a pediatric oncology patient, has built a special bond with Drake during her clinic visits and hospital stays. Laila loves animals and says she enjoys spending time with Drake since she cannot bring her cat with her, who provides her with comfort at home.

ā€œPet therapy with Drake is an expression of our wholistic support for patients and families,ā€ said Rev. Hans Martin Karrer, pediatric staff chaplain at Advocate Children’s Hospital who also serves as Drake’s handler. ā€œMany patients miss their own pet while admitted and build a bond of friendship with Drake throughout their treatment plan. Recently a patient smiled and agreed when I said that Drake is a great listener and keeps all the secrets you tell him!ā€

Thank you, Drake, for always showing up for our patients, spreading smiles and providing comfort and encouragement when it’s needed most. šŸ’›

This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Amy shares her inspiring story:

ā€œGrowing up, I was a healthy, active and competitive gymnast. At 14, I began experiencing severe back pain, extreme fatigue and significant weight loss. My parents took me to Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn. It was there that our lives changed forever.

I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). We were completely shocked. Like many families facing a cancer diagnosis, we found ourselves asking, ā€œWhy did this happen to me?ā€ Little did I know, this experience would ultimately shape the course of my future.

Over the next two and a half years, I underwent multiple chemotherapy regimens, bone marrow aspirations, lumbar punctures, blood transfusions, surgeries and a total of 19 planned and unplanned hospitalizations. I endured the many challenges that come with cancer treatment.

I became interested in my care and the team caring for me. I was surrounded by extraordinary nurses whose compassion, skill and dedication inspired me. They not only helped me through the most difficult time in my life, but they also planted the seed for what would become my future career.

When my treatment ended, I knew I wanted to turn one of the greatest challenges of my life into something meaningful. I got my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and from the very beginning, I knew exactly where I wanted to work.

I have been a pediatric oncology nurse at Advocate Children's Hospital for 19 years. My personal experience allows me to connect with patients and their families on a unique and meaningful level. It is a privilege to provide support, understanding and hope during some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Beyond my career, I have been blessed with a wonderful life: two beautiful daughters, Faith and Ellie; a husband who has been by my side since I was 15 years old and still undergoing treatment; and a career that brings me purpose every day.

I can honestly say that every challenge, every lesson and every step of my journey has led me exactly where I am meant to be.ā€

Oh the places you’ll go if you give a baby a book! šŸ“ššŸŽˆ šŸŖ

Child life, NICU teammates and parents at Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn and Park Ridge celebrated Read-A-Thon by dressing up our tiniest book worms, creating core memories for our NICU families while also supporting literacy.

Reading in the NICU has been demonstrated to be important for speech and language development, school readiness and success later in life. Reading also helps parents connect with their newborns.

Meet Erik! šŸ‘‹

Erik’s journey with Advocate Children’s Hospital began this spring when a growing lump that he discovered himself ultimately led to a diagnosis of Stage 1 rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of childhood cancer. With no other symptoms, what his family initially believed might be a routine medical concern quickly became a parent’s worst nightmare. Since May, Erik has endured weekly chemotherapy treatments and frequent appointments, tests and procedures have become his ā€œnew normalā€ – yet his spirit has never wavered.

Through it all, baseball has remained one of Erik’s greatest sources of joy and motivation. Erik has stayed connected to the sport he loves whenever possible, even continuing to play with his team when he feels well enough, after being cleared to do so. He wears baseball socks to every clinic appointment and speaks passionately about his love for the sport with his care team. Whether cheering on and spending time with his fellow teammates or watching his favorite team, the Chicago Cubs, baseball has provided a sense of normalcy for Erik.

As the Honorary Bat Kid, Erik, along with his family, enjoyed exclusive on-field access and spent time in the dugout during batting practice before the game. He also received a custom Cubs jersey and a baseball for players to sign, had the chance to meet and interact with Cubs players and was recognized on the video board during the game. This experience also marked Erik’s first time attending a game at Wrigley Field!

Today, with only a few treatments remaining, Erik looks forward to ringing the bell and getting back to being a typical kid doing what he loves most: playing baseball.
