Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach visited Homestead Air Reserve Base during Memorial Day weekend to personally thank the Airmen and support personnel working behind the scenes to support air show operations across South Florida.

During the visit, Wilsbach met with aircrew, maintainers, security forces personnel, and support teams from multiple units staged at Homestead ARB for the weekend’s air operations. He also discussed mission readiness, operational capability, and the importance of maintaining combat-capable forces ready to respond anytime, anywhere.

Aircraft and personnel supporting the weekend’s operations included the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, B-52H Stratofortress aircrew, F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, A-10C Thunderbolt II Airmen, KC-135 Stratotanker crews and additional Total Force support personnel.

Beyond the taxiway and barbed wire fence on Ammo Way, the 482nd Maintenance Squadron’s Munitions Flight, known as “Ammo,” operates within the largest munitions storage area in Air Force Reserve Command. Home to about 60 Airmen across nine shops, the 123-acre site functions as both workplace and family, where technical precision and tradition come together to sustain airpower through the assembly, inspection, and delivery of explosive assets. The work demands adaptability, teamwork, and constant learning. Airmen train one another across specialties, maintaining a culture where knowledge transcends rank. “Ammo is truly what makes our Air Force lethal,” said Chief Master Sgt. Anil Apana, a 33-year veteran of the field. For him, the greatest reward lies in watching Airmen evolve into experts and leaders, proving that in Ammo Country, precision and camaraderie go hand in hand.
