A crew of highly motivated Friends of Kachemak Bay State Parks volunteers recently tackled the overgrown Lagoon Trail, clearing just over 2 miles of fallen trees and brush—including at least four "apocalyptic" log jams that completely blocked the trail. Long days and hard work paid off. Somehow this all-star team still made it look like a relaxing retreat, thanks in part to stunning views and comfortable lodging at the Alaska State Parks Ranger Station which is available for our volunteer crews this summer.

Thank you to Mako's Water Taxi for transporting our volunteers over, and Parks for the return journey! 🚤

The job isn't finished yet—nearly 4 miles remain to be cleared on the Lagoon trail between Goat Rope Spur and Alpine Ridge. More volunteer trips will be planned this summer, and we'd love to have you join us! Get trained and certified on power tools, or help out as a "swamper" and clear debris, start by signing up here: https://www.jotform.com/form/250971472524055

Latest conditions report from Grace Ridge 6/15/26: “There were a few snow fields on the north side. No pictures, but I have this video. It shows two snow patches in succession & there were 2-3 others on that side."

Grace Ridge still has snow but the trail is visible and has been hiked through from South Grace to Kayak Beach. Expect a few snow fields and snow patches on the north side, either melty and slushy in the sun or if it is windy/cool the snow will be hard. Use extreme caution on any hard steep snowy slopes, bring poles or something for self arrest if you slip. Hike around steep snowy sections when possible. Muddy in spots. All downed trees have been removed from Grace Ridge and trail is now clear of downed trees on both South and North end.

Full trail conditions report now available on Friends of Kachemak Bay State Parks website at: https://www.friendsofkachemakbay.org/trail-conditions. Updates and trail reports welcome, please email [email protected].

Trails Day Report: Halibut Cove Lagoon

A dedicated crew worked to restore water service to the ranger station by repairing key components of the system. Volunteers also repaired solar equipment and addressed infrastructure issues to keep facilities functioning. Even with the excellent work of our spring opening work party, there's plenty more maintenance projects in Halibut Cove Lagoon if you are willing and able and interested.

Trails Day Report: Humpy Creek & Portlock

Volunteers traveled to the Humpy Creek and Portlock area to assess trail conditions. Only two trees were found blocking the trail and will be removed on a separate trip. A comprehensive report has been shared for the participants of the Portlock Half Marathon and others interested in the route. The observations collected will help guide future maintenance and stewardship efforts. Thank you! 💚

Trails Day Report: Emerald Lake and Blue Ice Trail

This crew hustled along the long route to evaluate conditions from Glacier Spit to Emerald Lake, documenting brushing, tread, and chainsaw work needed along the way. Volunteers also flagged difficult-to-follow sections. There's a lot to do here but now we have the information we need to plan for the summer. Thank you! 💚

Trails Day Report: Grewingk Glacier Valley

The Grewingk Glacier Valley team documented trail conditions and identified maintenance needs. Their assessment highlighted the state of the tram, a damaged trail sign, and an area of ongoing erosion that require rerouting in the future. And they had a stellar hike. Thank you! 💚

Trails Day Report: Alpine Ridge

Volunteers cleared some overgrowth, removed trip hazards, and assessed trail conditions along Alpine Ridge. Their work identified a handful of areas that could benefit from future brushing and minor infrastructure improvements while confirming that no major sawyer work is needed. Proposed routes through the high alpine area were also scouted. Thank you! 💚
