KPC would like to congratulate Kachemak Bay Campus professor Dr. Deborah Boege-Tobin on winning the CAFE Oh Wow Award for faculty excellence, being recognized for Excellence in Research and Creative Scholarship - Community Engagement! This recognizes exceptional research and creative scholarship which exhibits collaboration between faculty and their broader communities, facilitating the reciprocal exchange of knowledge and resources for mutual benefit.

Professor Deborah Boege Tobin is nominated for her community-engaged research that brings together students, scientists, and local partners to better understand human impacts on marine ecosystems in coastal Alaska. Through collaborations with organizations such as the Alaska Wildlife Alliance, NOAA Fisheries, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, her research examines marine mammal behavior and habitat use in places like the Kenai River and Kachemak Bay.

Her work integrates community concerns, agency expertise, and student-led field research to generate data that can inform conservation and coastal development decisions. Students participate in wildlife monitoring, environmental DNA sampling, drone-based habitat mapping, and behavioral observations while working directly with community partners. By collaborating with numerous stakeholders to conduct rigorous research, Dr. Tobin’s work strengthens local stewardship of Alaska’s marine ecosystems, all the while preparing students to contribute to applied environmental science and conservation efforts.

Dr. Ed Berg: A Geologist Walks the Beach from Anchor River to the Homer Spit. Tuesday, March 10, 6 - 8 pm.

This is an exploratory talk in Pioneer Hall at Kachemak Bay Campus, about some of Dr. Berg's observations on the beach over the past several decades. He will begin at the Anchor River, take the audience on a virtual walk along the floor of Glacial Lake Cook to Diamond Creek, take a look up the Diamond Creek canyon, and then move on to the Bluff Point landslide. Along the way, we’ll examine far-traveled glacial boulders on the beach, bacteria-generated concretions, and petrified and coalified stumps.

The focus will then shift to the Homer Spit and the effects of the 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake. Ed will present evidence suggesting that the Homer Spit is simply a product of longshore-current deposition during a period of rising sea level over the past 6,000–8,000 years, rather than a glacial moraine as originally proposed.

The talk will conclude with an examination of the potential future of the Homer Spit with accelerated rising sea level.

THIS IS A SIMULCAST FROM Anchorage, broadcast in the Pioneer Commons.
Cruisin' Deep Time with Kirk Johnson and Ray Troll, Thursday, Feb. 26, 7 pm

Kirk Johnson is Sant Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History where he oversees the world's largest natural history collection. He is a paleontologist and just completed a PBS program about his walrus research. He brings a deep understanding of science, museums, and the responsibility of knowledge and care.

Ray Troll’s work has long translated complex ideas about deep time and the natural world into imagery that is both rigorous and widely accessible. As “the t-shirt king of Alaska,” his art has been featured in galleries, anthologies, and films. Ray co-hosts the popular Paleo Nerds podcast and headlines his band, The Ratfish Wranglers.

Ray and Kirk come together through humor and discovery. They have been working together since 1998, and their never-ending road trip is now in its 26th year. Together, they remind us that discovery is often richer and more durable when it happens across boundaries.
