Center for the Arts of Homer

Center for the Arts of Homer One of Central New York’s preeminent presenters of the arts and a proponent of community enrichment. What would become of it?

We are a community of artists, art lovers, music makers, and creators. The Center for the Arts is most known for hosting national music concerts, but we also feature film screenings, a community theater program (Center Players) and showcase artwork by regional, national, and international visual artists in the art gallery. The Center also hosts classes, workshops and programs throughout the year,

and adds to the economic vitality of Central New York. Our facilities are available to other community organizations and individuals for a variety of educational purposes, events and private functions.

200 years after an early group of baptists began the planning that would eventually lead to our building, a small group came together in 2001. The First Baptist Church of Homer had outgrown its space and planned to leave the building. A core group of founders — neighbors and community members — met with church leaders and held meetings to devise a plan to save the old church and create something new for the community. A founder’s group was formally established by volunteers who brought considerable expertise and energy to the challenge. Their mission was to preserve the building as an important part of Homer’s history – and the gateway to the downtown Homer business district, NYS Scenic Route 90, and the Homer Route 281 business district. They recognized that preserving the building was integral to Homer’s significant National and State Historic Register District. They also focused on giving it new community life as an economic, social and cultural anchor on the Village’s Main Street and the historic Village Green. The Center was formally established as a non-profit organization with 501 (c) 3 status in 2003. Many of the original Founders group, supplemented by community members, created a Board of Directors to serve as policy makers and catalyze the grass roots support that was evident since the Center’s first public event in November, 2001. Board members and volunteers contribute services to support functions such as marketing, programming, operations, facilities management and development. Together, Center for the Arts’ volunteers are the true heart, soul, spirit – and hands-on-deck – of the organization, and the reason that the Center is a vibrant, dynamic, efficient and effective community arts center and venue. Volunteers are at the very “center” of the Center for Arts of Homer’s success story over its first decade. The next decade builds on that success story as the Center for the Arts continues to innovate under its new Executive Director, Ty Marshal – who has had extensive experience working with various arts and cultural organizations. Under Ty’s leadership, the Center is focusing on building a sustainable growth strategy focused on programming excellence, expanded offerings and outreach, new audience development, organizational capacity-building and resource development.

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher Miss Honey. During her first term at school, the two forge a bond as Miss Honey begins to recognize and appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves to punish those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!

THE SHARK IS BROKEN
by Joseph Nixon & Ian Shaw
Director: Matt Steele
Featuring…Mark Durkee, Eric Wolff, Andrew Richards
TICKETS & INFO: https://center4art.org/thesharkisbroken/

The historic first summer blockbuster movie is being filmed – but no one working on the film would know it. Dive deep into the tumultuous, murky waters of the making of a major motion picture with dueling co-stars, unpredictable weather and a shark prop whose constant breakdowns are looking like an omen for the future of the movie. In this comedy written by Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon, the short tempers and short circuits of Jaws stars Robert Shaw (father of the play’s co-author Ian), Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider take center stage as they bond, argue, drink, gamble and pray for an end to the film shoot, not knowing it will change their lives forever.

The Bones of J.R. Jones
Friday, June 19 - Homer, New York

“There was no ‘a-ha’ moment,” says Jonathon Linaberry, “no life-changing revelation, no singular flash of inspiration. It was just a fierce, steady, undeniable energy, a force of nature I had to wrestle and wrangle with for years until I could harness it.”

It’s easy to understand, then, why Linaberry—better known as The Bones Of J.R. Jones—would call his mesmerizing new album Slow Lightning. As its title would suggest, the collection is raw and visceral, pulsating with an understated electrical current that flows just beneath its seemingly placid surface. The songs are restless and unsettled here, often grappling with doubt and desire in the face of nature and fate, and frequent collaborator Kiyoshi Matsuyama’s production is eerily hypnotic to match, with haunting synthesizers, vintage drum machines, and ghostly guitars fleshing out Linaberry’s already-cinematic brand of roots noir. The result is a moody, ominous work that’s equal parts Southern Gothic and transcendentalist meditation, an instinctual slice of piercing self-reflection that hints at everything from Bruce Springsteen and Bon Iver to James Murphy and J.J. Cale as it searches for meaning and purpose in a world without easy answers.
