What About Taxes?
There have been some recent postings on our local social media pages that would indicate that there are residents who believe that voting to abolish the Road District would lower their taxes. Nothing could be further from the truth! In a recent publication by the Township referring to the Village's financial contribution to the Road District dated September 29, 2020 it sates that:
"...there continues to be an operating deficit of $806,024 for the year (2019). Therefore the Village did not fully compensate the (Road) District for the maintenance services they received..."
This would surely indicate that once the Township has control of the Road District they intend to raise the rates paid by the citizens of Homer Glen to make up for that $800,000 deficit.
In addition to those extra charges, Township attorney Keri-Lyn Krafthefer suggested in a meeting with Village officials that the Village lease the Road District from the Township annually. Adding these lease charges to the extra $800,000 would mean that the Village would be paying well over a Million dollars a year more to the Township for Road services, and once again the Township would have control over the Village's Public Works Department.
Our conclusion (and fear) is that the Township views the Road District as a revenue source for the Township. The more control the Township has, the more they can charge Homer Glen citizens for equipment and real-estate that the residents already own. That is why you must VOTE NO on the Road District Referendum. A NO VOTE on this referendum will keep all control of the Public Works Department and all taxes paid by the residents of Homer Glen in the hands of Homer Glen Voters. A NO VOTE on this referendum will also lower taxes on the 15,000 residents of Homer Township who do not live in Homer Glen by several hundred dollars. Village control of their own Public Works Department and the Lowering of Taxes to the rest of the Homer Township residents have always been the main two goals of this endeavor.
