Today, the Holyoke Fire Department celebrate the retirement of Lt. Mike McGeer and Firefighter “Uncle” Dave Matys.

We thank both of them for their dedicated service, commitment, and years of sacrifice to the residents of Holyoke. Wishing them both a long, healthy, and well-deserved retirement surrounded by family, friends, and happiness.

Line of Duty Death – March 16, 1934

James J. Sullivan, 63
Holyoke Fire Department.

Captain Sullivan died after suffering the effects of smoke inhalation while operating at a two-alarm fire at St. Jerome’s Church.

On March 16, 1934, Captain Sullivan was among the firefighters battling the blaze inside the church. During operations, he was overcome by smoke. Despite efforts to save him, he later succumbed to the effects of smoke inhalation.

Captain Sullivan was 63 years old at the time of his death and gave his life in the service of protecting the citizens of Holyoke.
