⚠️ Elevated Ozone Levels in Hampden & Hampshire Counties Today (5/18)
An Air Quality Advisory has been issued for elevated ozone levels in Hampden and Hampshire counties. Air quality is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and people with asthma, heart disease, or other lung conditions.
🌤️ What is ozone?
Ozone protects us high in the atmosphere, but at ground level it becomes harmful air pollution. Ground-level ozone forms when pollution from cars, factories, and other sources reacts with sunlight and heat. Hot weather can cause ozone levels to rise quickly.
Ozone pollution can:
• Trigger coughing or wheezing
• Irritate the eyes and throat
• Make it harder to breathe
• Worsen asthma and other lung conditions
💡 Health Recommendations
• Limit outdoor activity, especially sensitive groups
• Reduce strenuous outdoor exercise
• Watch for coughing or shortness of breath
• Use an air purifier or air cleaner indoors
