Strong Girls United Women

Strong Girls United Women Empowering Women and Inspiring Girls in Sierra Leone.

We provide sexual and reproductive health education while supporting women to raise crops and build communities.

Strong Girls United Women Organization marked World Menstrual Hygiene Day by reaffirming its commitment to supporting girls and women through menstrual hygiene education, empowerment, and community support.

The organization promotes the message that menstruation is natural and should never lead to shame or discrimination. Through its School Health Clubs, SGUW provides education on menstrual hygiene, builds girls’ confidence and leadership skills, creates safe spaces for discussion and peer support, and distributes sanitary products to girls and women in local communities.

SGUW’s HERE FOR HER Project, “WE DAE YH FOR YOU,” aims to reach 1,000 girls with menstrual hygiene education, access to quality sanitary products, and empowerment opportunities. The organization emphasized its dedication to ensuring that no girl feels alone or unsupported during her menstrual journey.

The message also celebrates the resilience and determination of girls who continue to overcome challenges, pursue their goals, and inspire positive change in their communities.

Strong Girls United Women Organization presents the first of a five-part series: real voices, real stories.
As we mark Menstrual Hygiene Month and approach World Menstrual Hygiene Day on 28 May, our female staff step forward to break silence, end stigma, and share practical, dignified solutions for girls and women across Sierra Leone and the world.
Watch, listen, and join us — because menstrual hygiene is a right, not a shame.

After 6 years of working in Sierra Leone, we’re proud to launch the new Strong Girls United Women website- https://www.stronggirlsunitedwomen.org/.
This new site reflects how far we’ve come together — and where we’re headed next.
Over the past six years, our programs and partnerships have helped create:
• Increased income opportunities for women farmers
• Reduced teen pregnancies and expanded access to education for adolescent girls
• Anti-drug and gender-based violence training for allied men and boys
• A new crop storage center in Sumbaya
• A 6-acre pineapple plantation outside Bo
• And so much more, SGUW is still growing across the communities we serve
Over the next month, we’ll continue building out the website to better showcase these projects, stories, partnerships, and collaborations as we continue to go from strength to strength.
This is what sustainable, community-led development looks like.
It works.
It’s efficient.
It’s scalable.
And it’s built to last.
Thank you to everyone who has supported this

Discover the sweet
taste of empowerment!

Strong Girls United Women, in collaboration with WECADO, has transformed lives in Kortumahun Community, Kakua Chiefdom, Bo District.
We supported women in planting over 6 acres of juicy, ripe pineapples—now ready for harvest and available for immediate sale.
These aren't just pineapples; they're the fruits of resilience, hard work, and community strength.

🌸 As Women's History Month draws to a close, Strong Girls United Women Organisation pauses to celebrate, reflect, and recommit. 🌸
This March, we've stood shoulder-to-shoulder with partners, government, and like-minded orgs across Sierra Leone to amplify women's voices.
From Freetown to the provinces, the energy was electric:

International Women's Day rallies at Lumley Beach and across freetown drawing thousands to demand gender equality.
Ministry of Gender workshops training 500+ women leaders on economic empowerment.
FAWE Sierra Leone panels on girls' education, plus street marches in Bo and Kenema calling out period poverty.

Proud to have participated in:
Power to Decide's Regional Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights Symposium, sparking bold conversations on taboos.
International Intergenerational Dialogue and Economic Empowerment Training, hosted by *foundations* —bridging generations for financial independence.

We continued to host our own "Her Voice Matters" storytelling sessions in our school club classes, where girls shared dreams unbroken by poverty or stigma.
But celebrations are just the spark, action is the fire.

Issues facing Sierra Leonean women and girls demand we move beyond hashtags to real change.
Together, let's tackle these mother issues:
Menstrual hygiene & health:
1 in 10 girls misses school monthly—our Hygiene for Health Basket Fund launches in May!

Economic empowerment: 52% of women in poverty; scale agribusiness training like our Agriculture for Livelihoods Program.
Education access: Close the 43% dropout gap with school clubs on reproductive health.

Gender-based violence: End the silence—support survivor safe spaces and policy advocacy.
Strong Girls United women organization places women and girls at the center.

Thank you to every partner who's amplified us this month. What's next?
Join us in May for World Hygiene Days
DM to collaborate.

*A Lifesaving Milestone for Sierra Leone's Women & Girls*

We at Strong Girls United Women Organization are bursting with joy and pride celebrating the official opening of the Paul E. Farmer Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE) in Koidu, Kono District on February 14
This million dollars + investment brings 166 beds, three state-of-the-art operating theaters, and Sierra Leone's FIRST Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) – truly a model for maternal and reproductive health care.
Sierra Leone faces one of the world's highest maternal mortality rates at over 1,100 deaths per 100,000 live births, claiming thousands of mothers and babies yearly due to limited access to emergency care, especially in rural provinces like Kono. Women endure long, dangerous journeys to Freetown for basic services, costing precious lives and futures.
The MCOE changes that: saving mothers through expert obstetrics, protecting newborns in the NICU, and empowering women province-wide with comprehensive reproductive health support.
It reduces risks, boosts safe deliveries, and lets families thrive, a beacon of hope for better health, education, and economic opportunities for all Sierra Leonean women and girls.

As an organization dedicated to sexual and reproductive health empowerment, we stand with this stride toward equity! 💪❤️👏
