Ozana Desir was our 1st Mom to give birth ’s “Sante Fanm” Women’s Health & Birth Center when we opened in January. Her son, Sowingly (named after us), is one of 90 babies our Midwives have delivered!

Soaring continues to sponsor Sat. Night Leadership Group, a gathering for young adult Haitians to practice advanced English conversation, share leadership development lessons, and provide support and encouragement for one another.

We have had to shift from weekly in-person sessions due to the circumstances in Haiti, and for the past two years we have met monthly online. Thanks to faithful volunteer leader Staton Lorenz from Central UMC (Traverse City, MI) for helping plan and coordinate the content of the sessions. Our average attendance varies and is typically less than the original in-person format utilized for many years, but the attendees (who are often different month-to-month) seem to love and benefit from the engagement, and we certainly value staying in touch via this technology!

The folks on the call this weekend included two English teachers, a small business entrepreneur, and the head of the Gov’t Tax Dept. in the NE Region of Haiti. Some of our other “regulars” include a police officer, a computer tech who works at a medical imaging center, an attorney who works for the government, an electrical appliance repairman, an aspiring clergyperson, and other small business owners and English teachers. We even have a member who works in a call-center after immigrating to the Dominican Republic (one benefit of the online format is that someone like him can join in remotely from another country!).

Over the years, this program offering—which is part of Soaring’s Education Portfolio—has helped numerous young Haitians seek and attain higher education and better job opportunities. ~Pastor Laura

Another key service is Food Distributions for Nutrition & Food Insecurity. Some of Families w/Children we serve are featured in the attached photos. These important ongoing projects ensure that the kids have good nutrition to fight malnutrition which is common in Haiti, and that families have access to food despite the often high inflationary costs of food and/or lack of access to due to the political and civil unrest rampant in Haiti. Many thanks to our devoted congregations and other funding partners who financially support these critical life-saving Soaring programs, and to our dedicated staff who deliver these services to their fellow Haitians.

Kathy has stepped down after 8 years on the Board, numerous trips to Haiti with her Nursing School Alma Mater—Michigan State University’s—medical missions to our Soaring Clinic, sponsorship of a Haitian child’s education who was born the same day as her granddaughter, leadership of the Communications & Marketing SubCommittee, and the visioning, planning, training for, and implementation of Soaring’s new Women’s Health & Birth Center alongside her soul-sister & fellow Board member, Brooke Gray.

We are grateful for the countless efforts & initiatives that Kathy has so enthusias-tically undertaken and underwritten on behalf of Soaring’s Board members, Haitian Staff, and all those we love and serve on our precious little island across the sea. I’m personally ever-indebted to her for her and husband John’s hospitality toward me—they have hosted me in their home nearly every one of the many times I’ve traveled to Michigan on Soaring business—and her staunch support of me, her encouraging friendship, and her always listening ear!
