The Hollywood Women’s Club has a long and rich association with the development of Hollywood, Florida. First organized in 1922, the founding members came to South Florida with their entrepreneur husbands who were officers in the various companies of J.W. Young, Hollywood’s founder and donor of the double lot occupied by the Clubhouse, built in 1927. It is located at 501 N. 14th Avenue on the northeast corner of Fillmore Street. The historical significance of the building is exemplified in its designation as a Hollywood Historical Landmark in 1985 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Documents filed in October 1991 for historic site consideration by the Broward County Historical Commission state as one of the criteria for designation: “Association with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad pattern of our history.” The statement reads: “The Hollywood Woman’s Club has played a major role in the development of the City of Hollywood from the early Boom Time years of the 1920s. Active in educational, social and civic life, the group has contributed to the broad patterns of Hollywood history.”
Additional recognition for the historical significance of the Clubhouse and the Club’s restoration efforts have included the following: Broward County Historical Commission Dr. Cooper C. Kirk Award in 2014 “for its dedication and effort in the restoration and preservation of its historic building.” The City of Hollywood in 2014 recognized the Club with the Preservation Design Award in “recognition of outstanding achievement in historic preservation.” In 2014 the Club received the “Good Neighbor Award” from the Hollywood Lakes Association. The Hollywood Historical Society recognized the Club with its 2015 award “In appreciation of their efforts to restore the Hollywood Women’s Club.”
The Clubhouse has served as the meeting place not only for the Club but also functioned as a community center in the early days. Regular education, cultural and social meetings were held as well as fund raising and political events in the early days. The building has also been used as a polling place, a public library and has been graciously been used by other non-profits. Early accomplishments include providing medical and dental care for local children, donation of books which became the nucleus of the first library, support of Everglades environmental initiatives and securing the first telephone service to Hollywood from the Miami Telephone Co. During the depression, club members provided meals and made clothing for the needy. In World War II the Clubhouse was used for support groups for “war brides” where they compiled boxes of gifts for soldiers overseas. Every decade saw similar initiatives. Current projects include support of Broward Outreach Homeless Shelter for Women & Children, reading with children at local elementary schools, as well as providing school supplies and donations to literacy programs, volunteer drivers for American Cancer Society, Arts / Crafts at Henderson Behavioral Center, donations to Washington Park Community Center, participation in Alzheimer’s Association walk, donations to Paws2Care Coalition dog rescue, a “Senior Santa” program provides a party and gifts to residents of assisted living facilities , Chair Yoga and Line Dancing geared for seniors are held at the clubhouse. We participate in the support of national and international initiatives, as well as support of lobbyists who promote the needs of women and children and environmental programs in Congress through GFWC.
