Ahhh … summertime. Longer days and warmer nights. Who doesn’t love summertime? With summer comes picnics and playdates, reunions and vacations, baseball and beach days. Whether you’re headed to the shore for a week or going for a hike at your local trails, here are some easy recycling tips to ensure a greener summer.
No matter where you are going or what you are doing, the number one thing to always remember: Leave no trace. Take out whatever you take in. Leave nothing but footprints.
Follow local rules. There are no federal guidelines for recycling and it can vary from town to town. You can easily Google the area to see what is and isn’t accepted in recycling.
Look for Recycle containers at your parks, beaches, trails. Ask at your hotel if they offer recycling services.
Purchase a good reusable cooler. They have all sorts these days. My favorite is a backpack one! Just say NO to the one time Styrofoam cooler and keep a cooler – maybe 2 (a large one and a smaller one that is easy to carry along) in your vehicle.
Pool toys, floats, noodles are NOT recyclable so be sure to dispose of them in the trash when they are no longer useable.
Skip the one time use condiments. Remember that cooler we mentioned above? Great place to keep ketchup, mustard, relish, barbecue sauce! All of these bottles, when emptied, can be rinsed and recycled. Plus you’ll have them all on hand for a rogue we**ie roast!
Remember to keep recycling clean! No food waste, straws, napkins, cutlery. Rinse jars and tubs before tossing into the bin.
With summertime comes fireworks. If you bought them in a box – you can recycle the box. The firework itself is NOT recyclable. To dispose of it properly, you should put used fireworks in a bucket of water and soak overnight. Once they are thoroughly saturated, you can take them out and it is recommended you double bag them before putting them into your trash. This method is also required of any “duds” that you may have.
Finally, in the heat of the summer it is good to keep hydrated my friends! Aluminum cans and plastic bottles ARE RECYLABLE. Check with local guidelines for glass bottles and juice boxes.
Now off you go! Have yourself a wonderful summer! Enjoy!
