Good morning everyone,
Today, we here at Great Lakes National Cemetery would like to go over a program that the National Cemetery Administration (NCA) U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs utilizes in order to help Veteran's and their families make plans for their final wishes. It's called the Pre-need eligibility program. This came out of a need for Veterans to better "know" if they will be qualified to be buried in a National Cemetery. This is especially good if, for instance you received a discharge that isn't listed as Honorable such as General, Under Honorable Conditions, or Less than Honorable. It's a relatively simple process. You can go to https://www.va.gov/burials-memorials/pre-need-eligibility/ and there, towards the bottom of the page you will find a link to download or fill out and then print the VA form 40-10007. You will need to fill out one each for the Veteran and the Spouse. Then, follow the instructions for returning the form/s along with your discharge documents (Do not send originals) for consideration. Just so you know, the approval time can be a bit long, as in months. No matter the answer, they will send you a letter with their determination. Keep this letter with your trust, or will. This letter does not guarantee a space in any particular cemetery, it is just to confirm that at the time the letter was issued, you are approved for burial in any VA National cemetery which has available space.
