On Juneteenth, we remember the life and witness of Venerable Pierre Toussaint.
Born into enslavement in present-day Haiti, Pierre gained his freedom and became a successful businessman in New York. A man of deep faith, he dedicated his life to serving others—supporting orphanages, caring for the sick, educating children and helping enslaved people obtain their freedom.
Despite enduring injustice, Pierre responded with charity, humility and unwavering trust in God. His life reminds us that holiness is found in loving our neighbor and working for the dignity of every person.
As we commemorate Juneteenth, may we give thanks for those who persevered through oppression and continue to strive for justice, healing and unity in our communities.
Venerable Pierre Toussaint, pray for us.
